"Beta, bas ek saal padhlo, phir life set hai!".

This is probably the most common and gruesome lie told to children by their parents in every Indian household. It's only after you spend decades studying and working hard that you realize that your life is still not 'set'!

While in school, being young, innocent, exuberant children, it was easy to convince the kids saying that the tenth standard board exam was all it took to get an amazing life ahead! New to competition, this seemed like an offer: 'shop for 10,000 and get 80% discount on all your shopping for life!'

Well, it surely appeared to be a great bargain. After you put in your sweat and blood into it, get great marks, you discern that the lifeline of the class 10 certificate was rather short. Yes, it got you admission to a good college or better said: put you in a new competition, a much larger field of play, a larger shopping carnival, where more exciting offers awaited!

Whichever stream of study you chose, science, commerce or arts, you were bound to answer at least one nationalized competitive exam. Your dad and a few enthusiastic neighbors and relatives again present you with an appealing offer. Knowing that you have grown up now, they tend to use specific terms this time: 'Just study hard and get into IIT. Then a good job, high salary, rich lifestyle, everything will come in a snap!'

Oh! how all of us fall for the lies again and again!

Once that is done too, 'Just get a decent job. There is absolutely nothing you would have to do further in life!' By this time you realize that you have been thoroughly fooled, but the picture of the near future they painted for you somehow feels beckoning. Accomplishing that one task could get everything in place. You go for it.

And this goes on and on. After a job, it is the promotion you work for, then your own house, then a world tour, then a larger mansion, better promotion, and you will never stop. With various people carving a tempting sculpture of what can be yours, you continue to toil for practically the entirety of your life.

The lie was a lie, but was it wrong? Aim for the stars so you at least reach the moon. Had you not believed in those lies, you might not have achieved what you have. In moments of distress, that picture of a 'set life' is what kept you from giving up. These pictures are nothing but milestones of achievement.

We are humans. We always play a game that has a reward, we choose the best deal. Nonetheless, it is a proven truth that the last of the 'just this year' is never going to come!

Content is hard to find and so is to stop toiling for a good harvest. The definition of success is improvised by YOU each year, and one day you will find your own mind convincing you: 'just this last year of hard work and then we are set!'. You know what's next, but you will keep going till the end!

Disclaimer: This is just a work of art. No intent of hurting any parent's feelings or making accusatory claims.

As you work your way through lies and ambitions, you might need some ice cream to lighten the mood! Read this article :
