Two servings a day keeps bone problems at bay

As believed by many, “Milk is just for kids” is proved wrong by a nutritionist Joanna Soh. According to Joanna, “Not just for kids, milk is good for adults too.” She recommends two full glasses of milk a day- once in morning and once before bed, will provide an adequate amount of nutrients. “Milk should not be used as a substitute, but rather, it should complement your diet as a part of healthy living”, she adds.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends, “Eating right, staying active and drinking two servings of low fat or fat free milk for good health and weight”.

Milk, being considered as a miracle drink is packed with many health benefits.

  • As per USDA National Nutrition Database, milk is an ideal source of nutrients such as vitamin A, B12, D, calcium, carbohydrates, phosphorous, selenium, magnesium, protein, zinc and riboflavin.

  • Milk being rich in calcium and vitamin D, it’s essential for stronger bones and teeth. Calcium and vitamin D in milk prevents osteoporosis.

  • The National Cancer Institute (NCI) states, “Research results overall support a relationship between higher intakes of calcium and reduced risks of colorectal cancer. An increased intake of calcium and lactose from dairy products may help to prevent ovarian cancer”.

  • Adequate vitamin D levels produces ‘serotonin’, a hormone associated with mood, appetite and sleep. Drinking a glass of milk in the morning keeps you full and prevents you from overeating, whereas, a glass of milk before bed helps you to calm down and blesses you with sound sleep.

  • According to Today’s Dietitian, an analysis of over 20 clinical trials suggests that an increased milk intake can boost muscle mass and strength during resistance exercise in both younger and older adults.

  • The research published in the American College of Rheumatology Journal Arthritis Care & Research says, “Osteoarthritis of the knee has no cure, but researchers say drinking milk everyday has been linked to reduced progression of the disease”.

Now that you know the amazing benefits of drinking milk, you might feel the urge of adding this miracle drink in your diet.

But, before taking a leap…

  • You must be sure that you aren’t lactose intolerant.

  • As the markets are flooded with different varieties of milk, you should check the labels when looking out for healthier options.

  • You should know that too much of anything can harm your health.

Today, as we are celebrating World Milk Day 2019, “Together let’s raise a glass to celebrate the benefits of milk for our lives”
