Honour killing of is the murder of a member of a family or by other family due to the belief that the victim has bought dishonour upon the family or has violated the principle of community and religion. Honour killings are directed mostly against womens and girls.

According to reports honour killings has been mainly reported from states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryna and Uttar Pradesh. Incidents of hounor killings in south india nad western india is minimal. Main reasons for honour killing in the family is beacuse of inter caste marriages and relationships, having intercourse outside marriage, being victim of rape, renouncing the faith etc

Many scholars beleif that the reason honour killing continue to happen because of caste rigidness and traditional caste systems and fear of loosing caste status. On the explicit side, The role played by Khap Panchayats in haryana has become very popular. They have their won rules and regulations governing them. Many cases of honour killings happen under khap panchayats. Honour killings in India has been rising and it is a serious concern. We need to change the society’s perception and view towards such killings.

It is also important to note that honour killings is not only prevalent in india but also around the world. Place like Bangladesh, Egypt, Israel, Pakistan etc have reports of honour killings. Honour killing is a human right violation under UN human rights laws. In, india there has been a rise in cases of honour killings and the govt. has taken steps to curb the same.

To tackle this menance, we need to dive deep into caste rigidity and mind sets of people. There is a need to change the views and perspectives relating to honour killings and protect our women and girls. We need to modernise and transform our thinking on rational lines. And nevertheless, one should keep in mind that humans do not have the right to pronouce sentences to innocent fellows merely on the basis of choices they make.
