• And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desire. So his description is the description of a dog: if you drive him away, he lolls his tongue out, or if you leave him alone, he lolls his tongue out. Such is the description of the people who reject Our Ayat. So relate the stories, perhaps they may reflect.
  यदि हम चाहते तो इन आयतों के द्वारा उसे उच्चता प्रदान करते, किन्तु वह तो धरती के साथ लग गया और अपनी इच्छा के पीछे चला । अतः उसकी मिसाल कुत्ते जैसी है कि यदि तुम उसपर आक्षेप करो तब भी वह ज़बान लटकाए रहे या यदि तुम उसे छोड़ दो तब भी वह ज़बान लटकाए ही रहे । यही मिसाल उन लोगों की है, जिन्होंने हमारी आयतों को झुठलाया, तो तुम वृत्तान्त सुनाते रहो, कदाचित वे सोच - विचार कर सकें

• Then We shall turn to what they had done and render it vain like scattered dust.
  और उन लोगों ने जो कुछ नेक काम किए हैं हम उसकी तरफ तवज्जों करेंगें तो हम उसको उड़ती हुई ख़ाक बनाकर देगें

• And We have sent down to you the Book in truth, confirming the Scripture that came before it and Mohayminan over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging away from the truth that has come to you. To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way. If Allah willed, He would have made you one nation, but that may test you in what He has given you ; so strive as in a race in good deeds. The return of you is to Allah ; then He will inform you about that in which you used to differ.
  और हमने तुम्हारी ओर यह किताब हक़ के साथ उतारी है, जो उस किताब की पुष्टि करती है जो उसके पहले से मौजूद है और उसकी संरक्षक है । अतः लोगों के बीच तुम मामलों में वही फ़ैसला करना जो अल्लाह ने उतारा है और जो सत्य तुम्हारे पास आ चुका है उसे छोड़कर उनकी इच्छाओं का पालन न करना । हमने तुममें से प्रत्येक के लिए एक ही घाट और एक ही मार्ग निश्चित किया है । यदि अल्लाह चाहता तो तुम सबको एक समुदाय बना देता । परन्तु जो कुछ उसने तुम्हें दिया है, उसमें वह तुम्हारी परीक्षा करना चाहता है । अतः भलाई के कामों में एक - दूसरे से आगे बढ़ो । तुम सबको अल्लाह ही की ओर लौटना है । फिर वह तुम्हें बता देगा, जिसमें तुम विभेद करते रहे हो

• The Old Man ' s Ghost is obsession with Past which rides on the shoulders of Present, subjecting the welfare of the living to a vain glorification of national culture and an unreasoning dread of change.
  इस बूढ़े आदमी का भूत और कुछ नहीं, अतीत के प्रति उसका ऐसा मोह है - जो वर्तमान के कंधे पर सवार है, किसी के कल्याण का दमन करते हुए, राष्ट्रीय संस्कृति और अकारण परिवर्तन की आशंका से उसे अन्यथा गौरवान्वित करता है ।

• They will cry unto them: have we not been with you ? They will say: ' yea! but ye tempted your souls, and ye Waited, and ye dubitated, and your vain desires beguiled you until the affair of Allah came, and in respect to Allah the beguiler beguiled you.
  क्या हम कभी तुम्हारे साथ न थे तो मोमिनीन कहेंगे थे तो ज़रूर मगर तुम ने तो ख़ुद अपने आपको बला में डाला और मुन्तज़िर हैं और शक़ किया किए और तुम्हें तमन्नाओं ने धोखे में रखा यहाँ तक कि ख़ुदा का हुक्म आ पहुँचा और एक बड़े दग़ाबाज़ ने ख़ुदा के बारे में तुमको फ़रेब दिया

• Or you should say: Only our fathers associated others before, and we were an offspring after them: Wilt Thou then destroy us for what the vain doers did ?
  या कहो कि" साझी तो पहले हमारे बाप - दादा ने किया । हम तो उसके पश्चात उनकी सन्तति में हुए है । तो क्या तू हमें उसपर विनष्ट करेगा जो कुछ मिथ्याचारियों ने किया है ?"

• because you ' re afraid that many lives have been lost in vain.
  क्योंकि आप को डर है कि कई जीवन व्यर्थ में खो गए हैं.

• That which they are engaged upon shall be shattered and all their works are vain.
  ये लोग जिस मज़हब पर हैं और जो अमल ये लोग कर रहे हैं
