• The natural Shudra works not from a sense of the dignity of labour or from the enthusiasm of service, though that comes by the cultivation of his dharma, not as the man of knowledge for the joy or gain of knowledge, not from a sense of honour, nor as the born craftsman or artist for love of his work or ardour for the beauty of its technique, nor from an ordered sense of mutuality or large utility, but for the maintenance of his existence and gratification of his primal wants, and when these are satisfied, he indulges, if left to himself, his natural indolence, the indolence which is normal to the tamasic quality in all of us, but comes out most clearly in the uncompelled primitive man, the savage.
  जो मनुष्य स्वभाव से ही शूद्र होता है वह श्रम की महत्ता की भावना से या सेवा के उत्साह के वश कार्य करता हो ऐसी बात नहीं, - यद्यपि अपने धर्म के विकास के द्वारा उसके अन्दर यह भावना एवं उत्साह भी आ जाता है, - वह ज्ञानी मनुष्य की तरह ज्ञान के आनन्द या प्राप्ति के लिये अथवा क्षत्रिय की तरह अपनी मान - प्रतिष्ठा की भावना से भी कार्य नहीं करता, न ही वह जन्मजात शिल्पी या कलाकार की भांति अपने कर्म से प्रेम होने या उसकी शिल्प - प्रणाली की सुन्दरता के लिये उत्साह होने के कारण अथवा पारस्परिक आदान - प्रदान या विशाल उपयोग की व्यवस्थित भावना के कारण कार्य करता है, वह तो अपने जीवन की रक्षा तथा अपनी प्राथमिक आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति के लिये ही कार्य करता है, और जब ये आवश्यकताएं पूरी हो जाती हैं तब यदि उसे अपनी इच्छा पर छोड़ दिया जाये तो वह अपने स्वभावगत आलस्य का जो भरकर मजा लेता है, ऐसे आलस्य का जो हम सबके अन्दर विद्यमान तमोगुण का एक सर्वसामान्य अंग है पर एक असभ्य आदिम मनुष्य में, जो कर्म करने के लिये बाध्य न हो, अत्यन्त स्पष्ट रूप से प्रकट हो उठता है ।
