After years of struggle, on 15th August India got its independence from 200 years of the British Raj. The wealth ofIndia was taken away which includes the precious ornaments. The Indians were paid less and devoid of many privileges. Many charter and acts were passed to suppress the rights of the Indians...They were harassed for not following the rules and regulations. They had to sell their material at a very cheap price and paid less as per the actual value. The raw materials were taken at a cheaper price to satisfy their own economy. As a huge population existed hence the Indians were hired and made to work for extra time and give less payment as compared to British labour. The rights and power of Indians were suppressed. In many places famines and other disasters took place which made the situation even worse. Under British Raj, poverty and underdevelopment of the country covered. Partition of India from Pakistan was another drawback to the development of the country. It not only led to the division of land but also people, minds, talent. Multidimensional poverty index which is released annually reflects the poverty condition of the country which is based on various factors like life expectancy, living standard etc. Poverty is a major drawback to the growth and development of the country. Poverty is considered as one of the greatest security threats as it reduces the quality and quantity of life of the poor and rich, and produces an unequal world resulting in instability. Many people are living in rural areas and are unable to reach to the benefit of the government of the country.

Poverty entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion, as well as the lack of participation in decision-making. Today, more than 780 million people live below the international poverty line. More than 11% of the world population is living in extreme poverty and struggling to fulfil the most basic needs like health, education, and access to water and sanitation, to name a few. There are 122 women aged 25 to 34 living in poverty for every 100 men of the same age group, and more than 160 million children are at risk of continuing to live in extreme poverty by 2030.It hampers the prosperity of the country. Various initiatives have been started by the government to reach out to the poor people and help them in all possible ways. Some of the initiatives are by NABARD. SIDBI is another initiative to help poor people with money. Pradhan Mantri fasal bima yojna, Pradhan Mantri Sadak yojna, Pradhan Mantri Jan dhan yojna, KISAN, Pradhan Mantri swasth suraksha yojna, Pradhan Mantri ujjwala yojana, KUSUM yojana are some of the important action and care is taken by the government of India. A midday meal is also started as a flagship program under the national nutrition mission. National pension scheme and much other help provided for losing the head of the family in some kind of accidents. To increase employment among the poor people various free training are provided to equip the poor with skills and opportunities so that the can find their own living.

In spite of several efforts... Many people are unaware of the initiatives and beyond the help.. Many still suffer due to a huge family burden, lack of food, low salary. Stunted growth and malnutrition still prevail and many people still face the struggle of spending nights without food and forced to beg to earn living.

India has the potential to overcome poverty and emerge as the most powerful nation in the world... This can be achieved by a joint initiative of the citizen as well as the government of the country.
