5 PLAYS YOU HAVE TO READ/ WATCH

Dramatics has always been a part of our lives . and to say, a rather important part. When it comes to even expressing the tiniest or the vaguest of emotions, dramatics has been there as a support . A live , full of energy one take performance, that shows the truest and the most vulnerable forms of our true self.

Here are my favorite picks that one has to read :-

1. Hamlet

One of Shakespeare’s best plays , Hamlet is a theatrical rollercoaster. Ranging from happy to somber the play is a journey for the truth ending tragically. One of the most famous tragedies of Shakespeare , Hamlet is a journey of a young man who fights for justice against his evil uncle . There is comedy , realization and an act within an act that end up brutally.

2. Death of a salesman

Written by the famous playwright , Arthur Miller , this play revolves around family , expectations and disappointments . The plays begins with Willy Loman returning from a business trip and complaining about the inefficiency of his son Biff. The play revolves against the past and the present with Willy going back to his childhood dreams of him creating his own business in the future. With him killing his dreams , he eventually suicides in an automobile accident leaving his son with a whopping large amount in the name of insurance.

3. Sakharam Binder

Vijay Tendulkar’s Sakharam Binder was banned in India for a long time. It is a story of a head strong man , who thought he could change the ugly shackles of a nation. He is a local book binder would takes unprivileged , used and other men’s discarded wives to make them his own family. Even though he uses them as a tyrant would- servants and sex workers , he gives them the liberty to leave whenever they wish.

4. Yayati

Based in the times of Mahabharata , Yayati Is a story of lust and love , desire and duty. The story is about a king Yayati who is forcibly bound due to actions on marrying a woman he detests and on the other hand falls in love with a local servant of his wife who by birth was a princess. Being unable to control his emotions he makes love with the servant producing three children. Filled with curses and boons this story takes a rather dramatic turn. Written by the famous Girish Karnad.

5. Mughal –e- Azam

Earlier directed by K. Asif as one of the best movies of all times , Mughal –e –Azam , as the name suggests is a play that gives you the best of the royal experiences. The script has been adapted to be made into a number of plays , but the story itself is that of love , respect , humility and most importantly the blindness for the kin. Akbar a very just and loving ruler who was ready to break stereotypes and get married to a Hindu Rajput , was liberal enough to make her a temple of her own , could not let his own son get married to a woman from a lower cast. The movies shows the prevailing hypocrisy in the most subtle romantic drama.
