There are many other countries including India, there is a growing number of students with stress. In fact, India has one of the highest rates of suicides among people aged between 15 and 29. The reasons may vary but fear of failure in the examination was a most common cause.

Why there is so much pressure that students think to end their life?

Tough competition, peer pressure, parent’s expectations, teacher’s fear, the vast and difficult syllabus, and insecurity of the future are leading to a nervous breakdown. The common issues are that students feel pressurized from their parents to do well in the class orX or XII board examination. There are many cases found in newspapers where students have committed suicide during exams and on the day of result.

Many studies suggested that students suffer from trauma or anxiety disorder due to fear of failure. Students face many consequences due to the fear of failure in examination. The fear not only comes from school but from parents also. Parents try to push their children to an extreme level in order to get the best grades.

There are many different reasons behind such behaviour of students :

• The education system of our country. Due to the heavy course, there is less time left for other recreational activities and socializing with friends which can help in the development of the child.

• The intelligence level of a student is measured by the academic scores and grades. They are not judged on the basis of individual quality they inherit. Fear of decrease in grades is causing stressful situations among students which are affecting their academic success as well as social behaviour.

• Parents are taking extreme steps like getting rid of cable connection, internet, computer, games, meeting friends etc. So that their children could concentrate on studies.

• The students of 12th grade have more pressure because their score in board exams will determine their choice of college and university will get admission for further education.

Science students are further stressed as they have to appear a number of entrance exams.

It has been seen that parents who are from the non-graduate background, put more pressure on their children for better academic performances than parents from graduate or postgraduate background.

If the simplified relevant subject matter is taught as per the choices of the subject made by students, then nobody will feel the pressure of studies. Students will understand fast and do their homework regularly. Since most of the learning process will be complete in the class itself, the parents will also be relaxed.

Learning capability of everyone is different. If a student is unsuccessful may be due to the unsuccessful teacher, but there is no one to point out that. For effective learning of a student, there must be anunderstanding among teacher, student and parents. Parents need to realise that “it is just an examination not the end of the world.”

Today’s world, the emphasis is not on gaining knowledge or wisdom, but on passing a particular exam. There is a need for quality education for a better future generation.
