Introduction

Forts (killa) are the best places to roam in Maharashtra. Most of the forts have lots of history and traditional culture. Maharashtra is well known for its forts. Forts are considered to be proud of Maharashtra. Maharastra is the only place which has these much number of forts.

Some people are for lovers, they love to roam in the greenery of forts, knowing about its history and feeling proud about its structure.

As the word fort comes the first thing that comes in our mind is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Around 300 forts in Maharashtra was under control of Raje Shivaji Maharaj. So many battles, so many real heroes and their real proudful stories are hidden behind the walls of forts. Let's us go around some of these forts through this article.

1)Raigad Fort

This fort is 820 metres tall. This fort was capital of Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It has a very exciting story of Hirakani Bai. This fort is also known as Hirakani Buraj on behalf of Hirakani Bai. This fort is situated in Sahyadri mountains range. It is located in Mahad, Raigad district.

2)Pratapgad Fort

This fort is located in Mahabaleshwar, in Satara district. Mahabaleshwar is the most famous hill station and tourist destination. This fort is also known as Valour fort.

3) Panhala Fort

This fort is present about 19 km from Kolhapur city. It is the most important fort if Deccan. This fort is situated in Sahyadri mountains range. It is 1312 ft. above its plain surface. Best time to visit this fort is the rainy season. At this season, the fort is full of greenery and atmosphere is also good.

4) Sinhagad Fort

This Fort is located around 30 km away from the city of Pune. The speciality of this fort is that it was built for protecting the environment. Most visited at monsoon season and on weekends. This fort is situated at the middle of other forts such as Purandar, Rajgad and Torna.

5) Shivneri Fort

This fort is well known and popular as it is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is located close to Junnar in Maharashtra. Now it is declared as a protected monument of Maharashtra.

6) Torana Fort

This fort is one of the large forts of Maharashtra. It is located in Pune district. It is one of the tallest forts. This fort was first captured by King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the age of fifteen. Torana fort is popularly known as Prachanda.
