Sundarbans National Park is located at the south Eastern and in the state of West Bengal ‘ Sundar’ ( Heritiera Minor) is the name by one of the Mangroves plants. The Sundarbans National park is a part of the world’ largest delta formed by the rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghana. Sunder is a vast area covering 4262 square KMs in India alone, with a larger portion in Bangladesh 2585 in sqms of India Sundarbans National park in India. The main attraction of Sunderbans are tigers, of which the delta Harbor large reptiles like the Monitor lizard, Estutrians, crocodile and the olive Ridley Turtle, for which there is a conversation programme in the Indian park. The park is surrounded by a buffer zone of 885 sq.kilometer.

Dundee National park is the only mangrove forest in the world having the tigers as it's indigenous population. Species of reptile such as the king, Kobra, the Common Cobra, Crocodile e.t.c and around 248 bird species such as asprey, purple sunbird, pale- billed, Flower peculiar, Purple sunbird, Mangrove Whistler, Small minivet, Brown fish owl, sunbird e.t.c

For Safari there are two kinds of boats available in Sunderbans National park ,Ac and Non- Ac. Also, they come in two size, small and large, for longer and shorter sailing duration, respectively.

How to reach Sundarbans National Park

By Road- From Kolkata there is Namkhana (105 km), Sonakhali (100 km), Raidighi( 76 km), Canning (64 km) , Najat(92 km). Buses and taxis are easily availed from all the major city Kolkata.

By Rail- The nearest railhead is Canning,48 kms away. The nearest town is Gosaba, 50 kms away. Trains also available from major cities in India via Kolkata.

By Air- DumDum (166 kms) is the nearest airport at Kolkata. One would need to reach the spot by road from Kolkata.

By waterways- Approximate time takes are:

  1. From Namkhana- Bhagabatpur crocodile Project (2.5 hours), Sagar island (2.5 hours), Jambudwip(3.5 hours)

  2. From Sajnekhali - Sudhanyakhali (40 minutes) Buridabri( Tiger Project Area) (5 hours) wetidhopari(3.5 hours) Holiday island (3 hours).

Motorboats to travel to Sunderbans National Park can also be hired from Donakhali and Raidighi.

Entry fee of Sundarbans National Park
The local tourists can enjoy the Sundarbans National Park for a minimal fee, the foreigners will have to obtain a special permit from the Forest office in Kolkata. The park entry fee is 60 rupees for Indians and 200 rupees for foreigners. There's also a 400 rupees boat entry fee( per day) . It's compulsory to have one guide per boat, costing 400 rupees for Indians and 700 rupees for foreigners.

Monday to Friday- 8 AM - 6 PM
Saturday- 10 AM- 4 PM
Sunday- Close

The boat service is available from early morning to 8:30 AM to the approaching down time of 6 PM

Note- No boat is allowed inside Sunderbans after 6:30 PM.

Best time to visit Sunderbans National Park

During Summer (April to June)- The hot weather is very uncomfortable for tourist, thus it is not an ideal time to visit Sundarban National Park.

During Monsoon (July to September)- Due to heavy rains in the Sunderbans National Park making the water level which makes the boat safari a risky affair. So, this season is also not an ideal time to visit Sunderbans National Park.

During Winter (October to March)- It is the best time to visit the Sundarbans National Park due to pleasant weather from October to March. It's the best time to explore the lesser explored six species of shark and ray, Saltwater, Crocodile, Olive turtle, the royal Bengal tiger and many paradized species. Many tourists traveling from all over the world for a captivating experience.
