Now everyone of you knows what a meme is. Though originally meant, “a small unit of culture”, memes have become one of the most famous and the most entertaining inventions of the internet. They basically consist of an image from a popular movie, TV show or a real life scenario which is juxtaposed with a different situation (mostly a current one) to show its relevance.
The main reason why memes are so popular is because they are so relatable. These images might not literally have any effect on us separately but when it is used as a meme, it is surprising how we relate to it. I think that's with our generation itself. We understand innuendos and hyperboles on a spiritual level. The meme maker might not even explain the meme properly but we still understand and relate to it. For example, look at the following meme.
Though memes are a reason to make people laugh and spread happiness and laughter, sometimes it costs people that laughter only. The reason might be either people not having a funny bone in them that helps them take a joke as a joke, or maybe sometimes people just go too far. Here are some instances when people got in trouble for sharing memes.
Met Gala 2019 helped meme makers all over the globe get content for new memes. Why would meme makers in India stay idle when they were bombarded with 'controversial' looks from our own Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone? Priyanka Chopra’s look on the main event was laughed upon by most of the Indians and was also used as memes. People also made a meme photoshopping West Bengal's chief minister, Mamata Banerjee's face on Peecee's hairdo. This meme was shared worldwide by so many people, but when it was posted by Priyanka Sharma, a BJP activist, things backfired. She was soon arrested and was sent for two weeks of judicial custody. Though out on bail, Priyanka Sharma stated that is unfair to arrest a person who shared the meme, rather, if the meme was so defaming the meme maker should have got punished instead of her.
Vivek Oberoi, who is known for his performance in movies like Saathiya and Company, had a tough time in Bollywood after he took a jibe at Salman Khan. Well, everyone in Bollywood knows “Kisise bhi Panga Lelo Magar Bhai se nahi”. Vivek was too young to realise this then and it costed him his career. But slowly, he is trying to come back with his bio pic on our very own Prime minister, Mr Narendra Modi. Now when everyone thought that he was getting a chance to maybe get back what he lost, he posted this sly and childish meme on the infamous relationships that his ex girlfriend , Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, have had.
The meme consists of three photos, the photo of old lovers Aishwarya and Salman khan and words, opinion poll on it. The second photo has Aishwarya and Vivek with words Exit poll on it and the last photo of Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan with word Results written on it. The actor indirectly tried to poke Aishwarya Rai through this meme but in return got backlashes from public, media and fellow celebrities. Well seems like it wasn’t so funny, Vivek Oberoi.
