2. Attachments by Rainbow Rowell – Orion Books (An Hachette UK Company)

This story is set in 1999, when the internet was only within the reach of the privileged. Twosuch ‘privileged’ people are Beth and Jennifer, young women who’re colleagues at a newspaper office.

Jennifer is happily married to Mitch, but Beth, the girlfriend of a local music band’s lead guitarist, who is scared of long-term commitments…let’s just say it’s complicated. Especially since they live in the same apartment but the rent and bills are Beth’s responsibility!

With the internet at their fingertips, the two friends use The Courier’s company computers and email facility to talk to each other about everything under the sun, even while sitting beside each other! Some conversations flow better when typed out, don’t they?

Obviously, the employees have been warned not to use company mail for personal conversations, but Beth and Jennifer amuse themselves by speculating which of their e-mails would be flagged after all the “restricted” words they use! They also wonder why they never get a warning for it.

Meanwhile, Lincoln has got a new job at The Courier—spending nights working with a computer. What’s interesting about it? Well, the classified ad had said, “Wanted: Full-time opportunity for Internet security officer” with a salary of $40K+.

If it had said, “Wanted—someone to read other people’s email” he never would have applied!

But this is what he’s stuck with, anyway, with so many of the conversations between Beth and Jennifer landing automatically into his folder.

And as the nights stretch into months, and Lincoln gets to know more and more about the two friends, he realizes that there could indeed be something like love before first sight. Which is the reason why he can’t stop reading their emails even when they are not being picked up by the automatic reporting system.

But will Beth understand his point of view? What are the odds that he won’t be just termed a cheap stalker and turned in to the authorities?

Read this completely fresh and witty take on modern-day romance to know where this love story ends—if it ever begins, that is.

My comments:

I fell in love with the female characters of this book first, and since all I got to know about them was through their e-mails (except for the character of Lincoln who has dedicated chapters showcasing his life), I could really understand how Lincoln began to fall for Beth.

The camaraderie between Jennifer and Beth is really awesome—they are completely frank with each other, their conversations are quite humorous, and their friendship is inspiring.

My favourite part is when Beth sees Lincoln in the office but not knowing who he is, names him Her Cute Guy. The discussions between her and Jennifer regarding Lincoln are really amusing!
