Makar Sankranti is celebrated across the country each year in january according to solar cycles. It marks the sun's transit into the makar(capricorn) so it is dedicated to the deity "Surya". Uttarayana period of 6 months starts from this festival. The most important Kumbha Mela that is held every 12 years at Haridwar, Allahabad,Ujjain and Nashik also starts from Makar Sankranti.

It is one of the major hindu festival which is celebrated in different states in unique manner on 14th january(sometimes on 15th january). People of different states celebrate this festival by making special dishes like daal bati churma, til patti, kheer, pakodi, khichdi etc., making rangolis, flying beautiful kites and visiting each others home with sweets and good wishes. The sky appears filled with thousands of beautiful kites specially in Gujarat. People greet each other with sweets specially til-gud and sweet words.

So let's celebrate the wonderful festival tomorrow with lots of sweets and kite flying and wishing everyone that "तिळगुळ घ्या, आणि गोड-गोड बोला / til-gul ghyaa, aani goad-goad bolaa" meaning ‘Accept thistil-gul(sweet) and utter sweet words’.
