It was a regular day at college. I was sitting with a few friends in the canteen thinking about how brutally shall our answer scripts be checked this semester. I wasn’t a part of the banter going on but I smirked every now and then, to express my involvement in their crosstalk. But suddenly, the topic of the conversation shifted to some characters from the most popular, I repeat the most popular, TV series GAME OF THRONES.

A full-time debate kicked off and there was an immediate hubbub in the canteen which earlier seemed to have a quiet atmosphere and the only sound that was present was the creaking of old tables and chairs but now, Game of Thrones became the topic for rebuttals and more rebuttals. I looked at my friends with eyes that conveyed watching none of the episodes of the said Tv series, thinking they would all reach to a diplomatic end suggesting that those who haven’t watched the show have a different set of interests and those who have, by default, have a different set of musings. But these people, started mocking the ones who did not watch the show or those who do not plan to do so in the near future. I could feel the heat of the moment and wanted to scream at them for being so patronizing and condescending to somebody who had no interests in that genre of TV series and did not even plan to watch the show anytime in future.

I could not contain my anger anymore. I clutched my bag and barged out of the canteen shoving aside two very well-built boys who were about to enter the canteen. On my way back to the hostel, my mind abounded with thoughts of all kinds. Was I socially inadept? Was I not “cool” enough for my peers? Was it really important to watch a TV series since its gigantic fan base had crept into the lives of all those who had not even watched a single episode? Or is it not wrong to make fun of people who are not jumping on the bandwagon and following the masses just for the sake of it? Is it so important to do something that everyone’s been doing?I reached the hostel with unanswered questions and doubts which triggered more questions.

I opened my laptop, logged into the internet, searched online for sites which aired the episodes of the Game of Thrones and put the first episode on download. This is what society has done to us. You did expect a change, right? Expected me to write a blog on how teenagers are being a bad influence on each other, question the terms and conditions of living in the society which does not accept people who do not follow the masses. But all these expectations cannot be heard over the volume of societal pressure that has been pervasive for ages. I can speak but my voice will be inaudible. So, the misfit has to fit into the Conformist Drama and witness some fantasy drama, to make it to the throne of the society.
