It was a 9 year long journey. We all wanted to see how this epic show shall end and we all had our fair share of theories. And then the finale crapped all over them. Forget all the theories, cause D&D kind of forgot about previously established plot points they never went back to, they forgot that foreshadowing doesn't mean character development and they kind of forgot about what made Game of Thrones great in the first place. Or maybe they just didn't care enough? They were pretty confident before season 7 that 13 episodes were enough to complete the story. But after season 8 aired it was clear that they struggled to even come up with a coherent narrative. 'The Long Night' and 'The Last of the Starks' had some really stupid moments but 'The Bells' felt like a bad dream. The production, performances, direction were great as usual( and of course there was CleganeBowl). But it left a lot to desire.
Jaime Lannister was the worst victim. After 5 seasons of build up, his redemption arc was basically thrown out of the window. He didn’t love Brienne and left her after sleeping with her. He didn’t care about the people anymore. In just three scenes 5 years of character development was undone. There were better ways to pack up Jaime’s storyline. Writing him off as a sleaze wasn’t the ideal way. Daenerys turning mad was an intriguing development and many had already predicted it, but two episodes weren't enough to justify her transition. It seemed sudden and out of nowhere because we were only given 20 minutes to understand what Daenerys is going through. What should have happened over a whole season happened within one and half episode. Arya going to King's Landing was completely pointless and more infuriating than anything else, because she was only there so that the audience can feel a little tension. And I am pretty sure at that point, nobody was actually concerned about her. Or anyone with a name on the “good side”. Yeah, she needed to get that moving on speech from Sandor but he could have said it long before and at a better time.
After the horrible fifth episode, I didn't expect much from 'The Iron Throne'. Enjoying the episode seemed like a far cry, let alone liking it. But I did enjoy it probably because this is the only show I have watched from the first day to the last. Jon killed Daenerys, that bloody throne was burned by Drogon, Tyrion became the Hand of the King, Davos became Master of Grammar, Arya went on her adventures from which she might never return, and Jon went back to the Wall, where he actually belonged. We also had the best scene from this season- Jon reuniting with the goodest boy of all. I won't talk about the mistakes made here cause they have already been pointed out by everyone and the memes have beaten them to death. And those mistakes are seriously painful. It does hurt when something you love begins to suck and blows out of the water by the end. But the biggest quality human beings have is that we can slowly delete bad memories and keep the good ones( most of us can). People will move on and only remember the things that made it great. See How I Met Your Mother, Lost, Mad Men etc.
In my first sentence I asked maybe D&D didn't care anymore? And the answer is No. Saying they didn't care at all would be completely wrong. After all they made this show. They are the ones who brought A Song of Ice and Fire to screen. They have received all the flack they deserved but never the appreciation. Even with all the problems this season had, nobody can deny the cultural impact of the show. Only MCU can match the Fandom of Ice and Fire today. 'The Iron Throne' brought millions of people together to either hate on it or shower love. Season 8 was extremely divisive and personally I didn't like it( Season 7 is still the worst for me). Yes I enjoyed the episodes with a closed mind but as soon as I started asking questions, everything fell apart. Still, I simply don’t want to hate it. A Song of Ice and Fire made me fall in love with reading books( it made me start reading books in the first place) and Game of Thrones made me fall in love with television. It will be derided for a long time( in 2019 long time means a year at most) but soon people will finally leave the bandwagon of hating it or blindly loving it and simply call it "good television".
I enjoyed the final season but was I satisfied? Ask me again in ten years.
