The Extraordinary story of JUN

The story of Jun is not an usual one, it is an example of how people can use social media for a better living. Jun is a city in Spain. It has a population of thirty five hundred people. The mayor there is Jose Antonio Rodriguez Salas. Quite a long name, isn’t it?His fan base is not as big as those of some pop stars or big politicians. However, his followers are devoted to him.

Since 2011, they had been using Twitter as a means of communication between them. If someone in the town has any reasonable issue, he can tweet a complaint. The mayor responds with another tweet about how he is about the solve the problem. If he doesn’t, other people get to know about this.

Professors from MIT are studying him to see how this example can be made fruitful for the bigger town giving them an open and responsive democracy.

Although their people from Twitter are studying him there is no official role of Twitter in making this possible.Since, people’s interaction with the official take place on social media, the requests are kept reasonable as others are there to keep a check on it.

If there is a problem with lighting at the streets, a citizen tweets about this and then the mayor retweets that he would be sending an electrician at the task. Upon completion, the electrician shares a photograph showing the street lights working, tagging the mayor and the citizen who requested for it.

In this system, the hierarchy is almost removed, as all the problems are being dealt on the base level only. Such a system appears to self-sustained and healthy. Professors studying his case have thought of implementing a similar model in a larger city like Barcelona where the population is in millions.

Although he had to check his phone all thru the day, he finds himself happy with his method of managing. This worked for the people of Jun too. And as a fact, the mayor was re-elected with a great margin.
