Modernization either leads development or devastation. In the race of modernization it is necessary to stay rooted to our origin. One must not eradicate the roots of human existence. Any kind of development that is resulting in desolation is useless.

Rivers are our major source of fresh water .Lesser the number of river higher the number of calamities. Everything in nature is interrelated to other. We and other elements of ecosystem are dependent on each other. Depleting rivers are sign of inevitable loss.

The reasons for this are pollution, population, exploitation of water, industrial residuals, water wastage in agriculture, deforestation and mining.

According to the data of rally for rivers 25% of India is turning into deserts. In 15 years we may have only the half water for survival. Ganga is most endangered river and Godavari was dry much of its length last year. Kaveri has lost 40% of its flow. Krishna and Narmada lost 60%.In Kerala, Karanataka and Tamil Nadu many rivers are vanished.

In few years there will be shortage of water in urban cities. Every 2 out of 3 will suffer from this. Water is not only for drinking but for domestic purpose and agriculture too. Agriculture requires 80% of water. Each person's average requirement is 1.1 million liter per year. Also due to climate change drought and tsunamis cause rivers to lose water. The rate of rain in monsoon is decreasing from years on the contrary the requirement of water is increasing. In Madhya Pradesh 60 out of 110 tributaries have gone dry. The completely dried Yamuna shows that the Taj Mahal may shrink due to lack of moisture in foundations. In Telangana crocodiles entered village when river Manjeera was dried.

According to Central pollution Control Board, 2 billion liters of industrial sewage flows into Yamuna daily. This pollutes river water to much extent and it becomes unfit for drinking. At many places drains flow into rivers. In Ganga, people throw plastic polythenes and wastes even the river is worshipped from centuries. They throw ashes in it. This water pollution has affected the aquatic life too.

Even after launching number of plans we are not able to meet our aims. Still we are facing ecological issues. We are failing somewhere due to less cooperation from citizen, old techniques, complex infrastructure and shortage of capital.

Ganga Action plan failed, it cost 6 billion rupees. It was huge loss. Reports say that the sewage amount has been doubled in past years. I cannot imagine life without water. Do you?

Many of the rivers are vanished and if this continues the rivers which are on the verge of extinction will also vanish. Within few years some cities will become desert. Industries must not be allowed to establish their plants near river banks. Instead of movements ,direct actions should be taken.
