Telugu cinema industry, also known as Tollywood has been playing a major role in the Indian cinema since 1921. The growth of this industry is so significant that within a few years, Tollywood has produced more movies than Bollywood. The Guinness World Record for the largest production facility in the world is held by Ramoji Film City. The latest sensation Bahubali has shown what the industry is capable of.

While the first Telugu movie has been released in 1921 itself it took 10 years for a talkie movie to be released. The earlier movies were mainly devotional, mythological in theme, but later on, the necessity for movies on contemporary social issues has been recognized. Movies on issues like dowry, untouchability that prevailed in those days were the main theme. However, after Independence, various movies centering the great fighters were made and succeeded.

After all the transitions, the early 2000s looked promising for the Industry with an increase in the movie's collections and also the industry's popularity. Digital mediums enabled people from other states to watch Telugu movies easily. I know it depends on the type of genre, a celebrity one prefers but I would strongly recommend the following movies for a Non-Telugu person.

Kanche

The first Telugu World War 2 film,'Kanche' draws an interesting comparison of the hatred between Nazis and Jews to the hatred between different castes, religions in our country. Directed by one of the versatile directors, Krish, the fact that a film featuring 30- 50 percent of war scenes completing its shoot in 55 days still amuses me. You can know how the things were in Andhra Pradesh at the time of World War 2.

Ghazi

Revealing the mostly unknown submarine battle in Visakhapatnam premises which could have been fatal if lost by the Indian Navy in the most thrilling way possible, 'Ghazi' is surely the best debut film for any director. It also got dubbed in Hindi and some other languages. So if you haven't watched it yet, make sure that you watch it.

Magadheera

Some people wish that if Magadheera was made after Bahubali or released again, it would be a tough competition to Bahubali. And it's true. From the vision of the Director Rajamouli, Magadheera is a less budgeted and 10 years old version of Bahubali. Probably the first Telugu film on such a grand scale and is the pride of Telugu cinema. Though fictional, the characters will live with you even after the movie.

1 Nenokkadine

The psychological thriller with an exceptional storyline, the screenplay of this film makes you wonder whether the movie is originally Indian or Hollywood. Despite the fact that it didn't do well at the box office, it still stands tall at showcasing the capacity of Sukumar's abilities. This movie surely changed the audience mindset with its most unorthodox way of making.

Aditya 369

Aditya 369 is a sci-fi movie made in 1991. The story revolves around a time machine. You will be able to witness the masterpiece directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao Garu and also the good old Balakrishna. With the low-quality graphics(compared to now), grand sets, you will surely witness an epic movie. I cannot believe that a movie like this is made in 1991. I feel that these are the few movies which will be good for a person watching from outside of the Telugu states with subtitles. Once you can understand the language you will be surprised by how many great movies were made by the Telugu industry.
