BlackPink in your area!

Unless you have been living under a rock, you must have heard of or (high five if that's true!) are already listening to K-Pop. It's been there for years in our DJ Playlist and party anthems. We have all grooved to the weird and yet catchy tune of Gangnam Style and BTS has almost become as common as Justin Beiber's name.

But why has it bloomed so much in the past few years?

When I was a teen, trying to be different from the world, trying my hardest to know the latest trends not just around me, but around the world, I came to know that everything is on my fingertips with just a tap of my ginger at the right place on my screen. With the social media blooming so much, there was no talent, no art, no view which was hidden. Everything was, is, wide open for us to grab. And we grab. We always want more, newer, more different, trendier.

And that's when I decided that Bollywood music needs to up is game because the world is popping with such diverse talent that I could hardly catch up with it all.

K-Pop though, it sucked me right in. I didn't have to try, I didn't have to make an effort to even understand the language, let alone the slangs in the lyrics. The beat trapped me and I couldn't help my feet moving, the emotions in the deep, melodious voice of singers caught me and made me sway with profuse sadness in my heart. I listened to it when I needed strength, when I needed to wake up even though my bed doesn't want to leave me, when I need to calm myself down, when I am alone, when I feel like partying. I could feel all the emotions, even through the barrier of language. I connected with the songs, the singers. I enjoyed the dance moves and learned them to heart.

And that, my friends, was why K-Pop became a sensation. Yes, the shiny jackets, the sexiest people which are also the cutest, the dance steps ranging from you squealing Baby!! at them to the ones that make you feel like you have sinned by just looking at them, the sickest raps and such sweet treatment of fans are also the reasons behind it. But we are talking about music here. It's not about faces or fashion sense. It's about connection, relevance and understanding. That's what K-Pop gives us. A warm, cosy alcove we can all belong in and which makes us feel understood.
