What comes to mind when you hear about the different rules (-cracy) in other countries? The rule of people by the people, the rule of authoritarian dictator, the rule of a military officer (coup). Is that all?

Just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many types of government rules to be frank, but let us discover 5 not so well known evident ones.

Cracy- of the World

Meritocracy

France is a type of Meritocratic democractic government. Where people with superior intellect come into power, irrespective of their wealth and birth. The current President Emmanuel Macron and nearly all prime ministers and presidents of the country are from a prestigious institute, École Normale Supérieure.

Theocracy

A political unit governed by diety or by officials thought to be divinely guided. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a current example of a modern theocracy, as is the Vatican City State and the Central Tibetan Administration, In Iran, the Supreme Leader has the ultimate political and religious strength, even above the elected president.

Oligarchy

Oligarchy is a system where select few rule the country and these few 'elites' are distinguished by royalty, wealth, family ties, education, corporate, religious or military control. Russian Federation after the fall of USSR in 1991 has been under the rule of few multinational corporations with Vladimir Putin as the head. The great Input, eh?

Kleptocracy

The infamous 'rule of thieves'. Kleptocracy is a government with corrupt leaders who exploit their own country's resource and people to extend their wealth and power. This is normally associated with oligracy, dictatorship or other nepotist governments. There have been numerous leaders who extorted money. Russian president Vladimir Putin is alleged to be the 'head of the clan' with $200bn assets.

Plutocracy

It is a political system where the government is run by people with great wealth and income. Historic examples of plutocracies include the Roman Empire, some city-states in Ancient Greece, the Italian city-states of Venice,Florence and Genoa, and the pre-World War II Empire of Japan.

There are some deliberately left government rules like geronotocracy, aristocracy, technocracy, mobocracy etc. A Reading exercise for your own amusement!
