How many times do we associate art with Bollywood? Maybe with Malayalam movies but Bollywood movies have more entertaining tonality to them. Even the biggest Bollywood stars like Shahrukh Khan refer themselves as entertainers and not artists. To be honest, they’re businessman and they’ll become anything for their business. That has been the case for many decades with brainless masala movies ruling the box office chart. Please mind it, I don’t have any problem with the masala cinema. In fact, my favorite Bollywood movies include the likes of Om Shanti Om, Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani among many but I also crave the likes of Manto, Black Friday, Shanghai and there are not many movies like them.

To be honest, Bollywood does what it is asked of, it caters to its audience. Mostly the audience wants the Hero to punch and kick 40 goons, make fun of the background cast which is mostly filled with comic actors, kill the villain and in this process woo and romance the very good looking actress of the movie. Audience wants those atrocious action choreography and songs picturized in the foreign locations. But times are changing and 2018 showed how the audience has evolved. The mighty Khans faced the wrath of the public and the new age actors made huge strides

.
Nonstar cast but high on content movies like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Badhai Ho, Andhadhun and even women-centric movies like Raazi and Stree did amazing business across the country. As a direct consequence of these results, Bollywood has shown the green light to many such projects like Ayushman Khurrana next and Rajkumar Rao horror flick among many. An exception to this is Rohit Shetty, the director who understands masala genre like no other delivered a mammoth hit in the form of Simmba and this year he is coming with Akshay kumar thus establishing a cop-universe of his own. The capacity of the biggest Bollywood movies can only be judged when it has a popular face headlining it. Someone like Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali or even Karan Johar who have perfected the art of marrying content with commerce can achieve this.

Bollywood has now become more open with many new production house making relatively small budget movies. An example of this is Tumbbad, high on content with a very new team of actors, producers and director, Tumbbad did well for its budget. At the end of the day, commerce runs movies. No one wants to lose their hard earned money. So there can be no art with no profit and art evolves with the audience. An example of this is Zoya Akhtar Upcoming Gully Boy, raw and honest, it promises Asli Hip Pop and with changing times the upcoming movies might promise Asli Art to Hindustan.
