Kolkata , the city of joy or the cultural capital of India, is pretty much loved by all. The slow pace of life here, keeps every one at ease. In the roads the tinkles of tram and acoustic sound of hand pulled rikshaw are quite melodious. The city has many faces. The North kolkata is serene, calm, rustic and nostalgic, while the South kolkata is glamorous, magnificent, jolly and out spoken. We have Coffee house to Midnight café, Rabindranath Tagore to Anjan Dutta. Despite all the awesomeness that we have, there is one thing that Bengalis take pride in because there is nothing like it, and that is – Bengali Street food.
Here are a few of my favourites that I am sure you’ll love:
1.Phuchkas
When its about street food of Kolkata , the first thing that pops on your mind is Phuchkas, not Panipuri not Golgappas , Phuchkas taste totally different and they are a delight to your taste buds. There are several types of Phuchkas: Jal Phuchka (Normal one), Dahi phuchka, Chatni phuchka, Special phuchkas. And never leave the phuchka cart without asking the extra Phuchka!
2. Rolls
Did you know that rolls were first invented in Kolkata? Zaika takes credit for that. Though you’ll find rolls almost everywhere , do try it from Badshaahrestaurant in New market.
3. Luchi and Alur dom
The dream breakfast of every Bengali. The white fluffy luchi (Similar to puris) and delicious and spicy alur dom are a delight together. The only match made in heaven I’m interested in. If you ever visit BBD Bag, Fairlie place, try their luchi alur dom!!
4. Telebhaja
In the gloomy evenings , a gathering with you friends with telebhaja and muri can make it awesome. From young to old, every Bengali loves a bite of telebhaja. Fritters or telebhaja is a deep fried snack made with any vegetable or meat of your chioice – Brinjal, onion, potato, pumpkins, chicken, fish,etc,- You name it and you’ll get a telebhajafor it. You will find telebhaja shops almost everywhere in Kolkata. But do visit Kalika Mukhorochok Telebhaja in College street for the varieties.
5. Ghoti Garam
The delicious and tangy mixture of Chanachur, lemon juice and onion in the streets of Kolkata is worth a try. If you ever visit Princep Ghat , enjoy the serenity of the river with a packet of Ghoti Garam. It really helps you to get lost in your subconscious thoughts and the beauty of the scenery.
