Homosexuality has always been a topic of debate and controversies regarding the position and rights of the LGBT community. Should they be feared and eliminated as harmful, corruptive force?Or should they be welcomed with open minds and seen as simply another colour of human variety?

6th of September 2018, one of the most important days in the history of India, the day India took a step closer towards equality and condemned discrimination, a step towards a new era. It is the day when homosexuality was officially declared legal after the British imposed laws to criminalise it during their rule in India under the name of “ against the order of nature” and also their strong belief in Christianity which proclaims homosexuality to be a sin. Even after the government taking up actions to gives rights to this section of our society, other part of our society has failed to do so. Most LGBT people in India remain under the cover, fearing discrimination from their family and society. In a world where the young generation are been thought about equality regardless of their age and gender but at the same time the topic of sexual preference and gender identity is been avoided and often portrayed as substandardand transgressive leading to abuse and rampant bullying of such category of students often leading to depression or suicide . Acceptance towards LGBT community might have increased in the young youth from the past years but in the boundaries of home, family and school their case still remains to be a whole different scenario and in rural areas people’s perception in many cases has led them to convert LGBT by getting them raped by an opposite gender in order to cure them as if it is a disease and not a choice.

Ramayana and Mahabharata which is one of greatest epics of India and even many temples in India like Khajuraho gives enough evidence of practice of homosexuality in the ancient times of India. None of the sacred Hindu text contains a straight forward condemnation of homosexuality. And coming to the Bhagavatam, it does not explicitly describe nor proscribe it but homosexuality has been said to have existed since dawn of creation. Opponents of homosexuality in the name Hindu religion argue that love is only natural between a man and women and it’s impossible for two man and two women to experience the same form of love and therefore it can only be a product of lust, and lust is wrong. But nowhere in the ancient text is love limited between a man and a woman so on religious grounds such statements cannot me made.

Humans are often titled to be one of the most intelligent species on this planet but here we are discriminating our own kind for their choices and gender just because it is unusual to us. We need to understand that there is never going to be one colour, one race, one choice, one sound or one anything. We often fail to understand that not everyone’s choices are going to satisfy our definition of right but that doesn’t have to make their view or choices wrong because not everyone comes from the same background or grow up with the same morals that often is responsible to shape our thoughts. It is disappointing to know that we out of all fail to appreciate a world filled with variety. India will always fail to be developed in all terms until we as a society fail to keep an open mind and learn to accept people as they are. If the government can take a step ahead then why not us?
