What is Mentality? Does it refer to the mindset of a person at a particular point of time? Or does it tell us about the opinion one has about particular thing? I don’t think so. I would rather define ‘Mentality’ as a driving force in our mind that leads to formation of various opinions about various things at different point of time. From people doing discrimination on the basis of race, colour, caste, creed, sex to the people involved in various scams that we see today and the people who epitomized nobility from Mother Teresa to Malala Yousufzai, and from Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar to Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, all these people are known to us because of their mentality which ultimately made them do what they did. Though the concept of mentality itself is polemical in nature, however it is something of vital importance in a person’s character.

Talking about the present times we’ve people who portray themselves as those abstemious to antisocial activities with great mental acuity , however as they say that no secrets remain hidden for a long time, similarly the evidences against them result in debunking of these people. However, it is really ironical that the common people with lackluster and obsequious mindset actually find these people worthy to venerate. Not only this, all those political leaders whom we see being arrested or being held guilty for different scams do such things because of their degraded mentality. However, we cannot just blame the braggart political leaders or famous personalities for their mentality, it is us too, who need to change our blithe attitude as it is because of us that many great initiatives or missions framed by the government don’t get implemented in a fruitful way. For example, the ‘Tejas Express’ started on 24th May, 2017 between Mumbai and Goa and on the very second day we see that many high-quality headphones provided to the passengers go missing, there are scratches all over the LED screen and that even after the introduction of the “Swach Bharat Mission’ there is garbage and waste loitered around in the train. Talking further about various incidents in our country related to intolerance like the Godhra incident or the Ram-Mandir incident where the hidebound mentality and attitude of people has resulted in the languish of societal harmony and unity. Today not only our country but various places across the world have become intolerant just because of the mentality of people. What we really need to do is to thwart ourselves from the thoughts of such people and try to temper their attitude and mindset so that they think and act rationally.

To change one’s mentality is a really difficult task, but, not impossible. The real challenge is to change these headstrong people mentioned above so that they can become more pliable in their thinking. Our country and the world needs people who are objective in their thinking, for their thinking and actions would serve as a restorative for the society’s growth as a whole. It is really crucial and vital that all of us rescind all the negativity from our mind and for the betterment of our society not let the good thoughts in our mind be crepuscular but active all day and all night. This article is a clear enunciation to invoke in the minds of the people that an objective mentality and clarity in thoughts and actions is really crucial for shaping an individual as well as a society.
