When you imagine an action movie made in Bollywood, what comes to your mind? A star cast? Action scenes that make you forget what gravity is? Well, here's a movie that's kicking away all of it.
While the filmmakers of Bollywood are engrossed in making biopics (a lot of biopics), some very patriotic movies or in some cases, remakes of old cult classic comedy movies in the name of sequels, Vasan Bala comes out with one of the most originally created works in recent times. Besides being a joyful comedy, 'Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’ is a superhero movie, which tells the story of Surya, a boy, who is born with Congenital insensitivity to pain. In simple terms, it means that he cannot feel any pain, which the title of the movie very quirkily explains.
After 'Bhavesh Joshi Superhero’, this is the second most realistic superhero movie made in Bollywood. It does not have a flying hero, aliens, mutants or any other supernatural stuff. It is simply the story of a boy, who, since childhood, has been passionate about learning martial arts to defeat all criminals besides having the advantage of his insensitivity to pain.
Talking about other characters, there is Supri, a girl who has been Surya’s friend since childhood. She is a strong female character, who is not a damsel in distress. She has been trained in martial arts and is an amazing fighter who, very effortlessly, beats up goons. Her fight sequences are exuberant to watch.
Then we have Surya's grandfather, who guides him and introduces him to great martial arts movies, which Surya watches and learns from. And finally, we have the antagonist, who is a psychopath with quirks.
The characters have been brilliantly presented by the actors. Abhimanyu Dassani, who plays Surya, gives a solid performance. This is surprisingly an action movie of Bollywood, where the actor can truly act well besides giving good action sequences. He perfectly portrays the character, who is a blend of eccentricity and solemnness. Radhika Madan, who plays Supri has also given a great performance, showing her character’s strengths as well as her vulnerabilities perfectly. Mahesh Manjrekar, who plays Surya's grandfather, has done a great job, as well. The wisdom of the character along with its cheerfulness have been impressively presented by him. But the best performance to look out for, is of Gulshan Devaiah. He plays two roles: one is of a drunk and handicapped karate master, who despite being a martial artist, has a vulnerable personality, and second, of his twin brother, who is completely opposite of the first character. He is a psychopathic villain who has a hysterical personality. Despite so much contrast in both the characters, Gulshan Devaiah very remarkably and spectacularly portrays them both. Also, the performance of Jimit Trivedi, who plays Surya's father, is notable.
All in all, this movie is definitely one to watch. One could say that Vasan Bala has made a movie that we always wanted to watch in Bollywood. A little boy who learns karate from watching martial art movies and has a childlike and dramatic perspective of the world, is what is a treat to watch. The cinematography of the movie is commendable. The scenes have been shot adeptly. The editing too, is profound and masterly! The character of Surya breaks the fourth wall in a funny and interesting way. This movie ends a lot of clichés and gives us a fun ride.
Also, this movie is so original, that it also has original music!
