Top 5 Bollywood movies forthe weekend

The silver screen definitely holds some kind of magical charm for most of us. That is why every holiday plan ends in movies for us. We enjoy the 2_2.5 hours we spent watching a movie provided it’s a good movie. Now this ultimately leads to a question – what constitutes a good movie or what is good movie.

Movie is a subjective experience. Hence there are many subjective answers regarding good movies. Every movie lover will have a list of top five movies with them. The following is a list of my favourite Bollywood movies.

1. Peepli Live

Directed by Anusha Rizvi, the movie takes up the serious problem of farmer suicides and gives it a satirical tone. The short lived media attention for the matter and the illogical government responses in the movie are highly relatable in the present context.

2. Newton

Directed by Amit V. Masurkar and starring Rajkumar Rao in the lead, Newton showcases what elections mean to different sections of the people. An unavoidable official duty for some, a sacrosanct act for the protagonist, a power game for the Maoists and a farce for the local people. When perceptions regarding elections fail to meet a common ground Newton struggles tocarry out the election process

3. Stree

The movie is Directed by Amar Kaushik with Rajkumar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead. I am grateful to the movie for proving that comedy does not always mean sexual and gender jokes. The biggest credit of the movie is being anti-feminine. The rest you will have to watch on screen.

4. Highway

Written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, highway shows us the different manifestations of safety, freedom and bondage. The fact that the lead character was at most free and safe in captivity forces us to look into the safety of our “comfort zones”

5. Piku

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Piku is a visual treat. The normal but insane Banerjee family is adorable for is absence of “Bollywood drama” and liberal notions. The story flows like a serene river just like their journey to their family house. The performance of all the characters are commendable.

Many of these movies have changed the definitions of mainstream Bollywood movie. The have reminded us that movies need not be always about elite patriarchalnotions. And for that fact these are my top five.
