Mentally healthy people have a positive self-image and can relate successfully to others most of the time. They are able to handle life’s everyday challenges and changes, as well as its traumas and transitions loss of loved ones, marriage difficulties, school problems, the challenge of retirement, etc. People who are mentally healthy may experience different problems which may lead to depression. But people who are mentally ill don't have any such experience because they are not in the state of distinguishing what is going on in their health and life.

In the present time, many people all over the world are suffering from the problem of mental illness, which we call Depression. Depression is an illness with many cause and many forms. It is a disorder of someone’s moods or emotions; it is not an attitude that someone can “control”. According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, depression is a condition that affects approximately 5% of children and teens at any given time. Depression can affect people of all ages, races and socioeconomic classes, and can strike at any time. People suffering from depression may have variety of symptoms, most commonly is feeling sadness and others are worthlessness, hopelessness, change in appetite, suicidal thoughts, sleep problems, memory problems, unexplainable crying spells, etc. Depression becomes an illness if sadness persists for several days.It affects our emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and biological functions. It doesn't allow a person to perform their works normally. It also can destroy the individual personality.

There are thought to be many causes for the depression. Depression usually results from a combination of recent events and other longer-term or personal factors, rather than one immediate issue or event. The causes may differ for the teenagers and the adults. For adults, a variety a distressing situations such as job loss, death of a loved one, financial problems, divorce, certain serious illness, etc. effect to get depressed. Some people may be more at risk of depression because of their personality, particularly if they have a tendency to worry a lot, have low self-esteem, are sensitive to personal criticism, or are self-critical and negative. Also drug and alcohol use can both lead to and result from depression. Many people with depression also have drug and alcohol problems. Talking about the teens, they suffer through depression through various issues. Young people who are struggling with their sexual identity have an especially high risk for depression. So do teens who have trouble adjusting socially, or have a lack of social or emotional support. Additionally, teens are more stressedby peers on social media and the “fear of missing out” leads them to depressed. Also due to overpressure of academics students of teenage suffer through depression. Problems in the home, particularly those between a teen and his or her parents, are some of the most common reasons for depression in teens.

Many doctors use a manual named Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders which diagnose a person with major depressive disorder. To diagnose a person with depression disorder, doctors may ask patients about their family health history, mood and behavior patterns (such as eating and sleeping), thoughts of suicide and other related topics. They also do some medical tests to check whether the person is medically well or not. Depression is treatable and can be cured by daily exercise, enough sleep, etc. Treatment for depression is one type of effective psychotherapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT help one to change the wayands of thinking and behaving that may be damaging or contribute to depression. For many people, a combination of medication and psychotherapy may be the best choice. Depression treatment can take time to work so don't give up.
