Climbing the Mount Everest is the dream she set for her, lying on the hospital bed with one leg amputated. Yes, that’s the determination and passion this girl holds on. That’s all about India's pride "Arunima sinha".

She is a former national level volleyball and football player. She was born in the year 1988 in a small town called Ambedkarnagar near Lucknow, Arunima Sinha lost her father at the age of three. His father was an engineer in the army and mother was a health department supervisor. She was a national level volleyball player and decided to keep a hold on her sports to pursue a job and applied at CSIF, But unfortunately, that day the story of her life changed. She was thrown out of a running train by some robbers while she was resisting their chain-snatching attempt. She tried to get up, But the another train ran over her leg. She was saved from death but one of her legs had to be amputated below the knee.

Her determination not let the unfortunate incident overtake her life, Arunima decided that she had to do something about it. Arunima decided to reclaim her voice when the media and people around made stories that she committed suicide by jumping off the train. She began to pull over the impossible dreams she could set for herself, and that’s what she did. She decided to climb on top of Mount Everest. She started training for her feat and under the guidance of Bachendri Pal became the first woman to climb Mount Everest with prosthetic legs.

Her achievements.

  • The woman amputee who created a world record by climbing Mount Everest received the honorable Padma Shri award which is fourth highest civilian award in India.

  • She is also awarded Tenzing Norgay Highest Mountaineering Award in India same as Arjun Award.

  • Arunima Sinha awarded honorary degree from the University of Strathclyde.

Ms Sinha said: “I’m very happy and grateful to receive this honorary degree from the University of Strathclyde. This award delivers a good message to the youth of India and the world over that if you strive to reach your goals in life your achievements will be recognised.”

She wrote the book " Born again on the mountain" which was launched by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on December 2014.

A journey from the tragic incident on the railway track to the top of Everest, the journey of a girl who set the dream to climb the world’s highest mountain peak while lying over the bed with onedamaged leg. Arunima Sinha has become the first female Indian amputee to climb Mount Everest. She proves that every dream can be fulfilled with determination and passion.
