Greek God And Goddesses

There are certain myths about the origin of God and goddesses told by Greeks from ancient time.
The Greek myth was not all written on the same day, it has evolved over time along with the Greek civilization, expanding into a complex story involving multiple characters.

Their gods are not perfect as depicted by Hindu mythology. On the contrary of heroism, their characters arise out of human failures, jealousy, anger, and perfect. They were anything but perfect.

They were just different from frail humans, on the contrary, they were strong and had some heavenly characters.

They ate magic food, covered astounding distances, wielded powerful distances, heard and answered whispered prayers and worked amazing prayer. And another perk was of immortality. So basically if you are vampire diaries fan then you can easily correlate, they were literally a hybrid of Bonnie Bennett and Damon Salvatore.

So the story of Greek goddess began with a story of power hungry son who killed his own flesh and blood with the desire of power. Heaven had 12 sons known as titans. This was all doings of Cronos the youngest son who took the throne from his father forcefully.

Heaven cursed him for having the same fate. To reverse the prophecy he killed his own children. But despite his preventive measure, his wife gave birth to a child secretly named Zeus who became the end of Cronos. He saved his siblings and battled with titans.

Zeus and his brother shared out world got hold of different realms. Group of these mystical Greek God were called Olympians.

When things had to be decided, this council of 12 gods met on Mount Olympus to discuss things.

Zeus was the king of Greek his who lived on the mount of Olympus. He ruled the sky and thunder. He married Greek goddess Hera and gave birth to ten children.

His symbols include the lightning bolt, the eagle, the bull, and the oak tree. His winged horse Pegasus carried his lightning bolts and he trained an eagle to retrieve them. He could also control the weather causing rain and huge storms. Zeus also had other powers. He could mimic people's voices to sound like anyone. He could also shapeshift so that he looked like an animal or a person. If people made him angry, sometimes he would turn them into animals as punishment.

His brother Poseidon was also a powerful Greek God who rules over water or any body of water. So, he could create storms in the sea and often earthquakes. He was a God of importance for sailors.

Poseidon is pictured with a three-pronged spear called a trident. He usually has curly hair and a beard. Sometimes he is shown riding his chariot which is pulled by the hippocampus (horses that have fishtails).

Hera, goddess of women, marriage, and childbirth was married to Zeus who was also his brother. A great strategy to breed a pure line( isn't it).

Hera was usually pictured wearing flowing robes, a crown, and holding a lotus scepter. Sometimes she was shown sitting on a throne or riding a chariot drawn by peacocks.

Apollo is the Greek god of music, poetry, light, prophecy, and medicine. He had a twin named Artemis, the Greek goddess of hunting. They were born to Zeus with Leto( another Greek goddess). Apollo was pictured as a handsome athletic youth with curly hair. He usually had a laurel wreath about his head that he wore in honor of his love for Daphne. Sometimes he was shown holding a bow and arrow or a lyre. When traveling, Apollo rode a chariot pulled by swans.

He is blessed with the power of wielding healing properties and causing illness. He could peek into the future.

Artemis is generally pictured as a young girl wearing a knee-length tunic and armed with her bow and arrow. She often is shown accompanied by forest creatures such as deer and bears. When traveling, Artemis rides a chariot pulled by four silver stags. She aced the art of throwing perfect aim using bow and arrow.

Hermes was the messenger of gods who aced agility. He wore winged sandals (which gave him super speed) and sometimes a winged cap. He also carried a special staff called a caduceus which had wings at the top and was entwined by two snakes.

Athena was the patron goddess of the city of Athens.

Athena was often depicted as a warrior goddess armed with a spear, a shield, and a helmet. Sometimes she would be wearing a cloak or shield (Aegis) adorned with the head of the monster Medusa.

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love and beauty. She is famous as the most beautiful goddess among the other goddesses.

Ares was the unliked God who was God of war harboring violent nature with cowardly behavior.

Hephaestus was the Greek god of fire, blacksmiths, craftsmen, and volcanoes. He was known as a kind and hardworking god, but also had a limp and was considered ugly by the other gods. He was despised by Hera because she gave birth to an ugly child.

Demeter is the Greek goddess of the harvest, grain, and fertility. She had control over the harvest and the growing of grains. She could cause plants to grow (or not grow) and had control over the seasons. She also had some control over the weather and could make people hungry.

Hestia is the Greek goddess of home, hearth, and family. Her place was later taken by Dionysus( son of Zeus and here), God of wine.

As Hestia wanted to get rid of all the bickering of God and goddess.

Here comes the last most powerful Greek god Hades who rules the land of the dead called the Underworld. Hades is usually pictured with a beard, a helmet or crown, and holding a two-pronged pitchfork or a staff. Often his three-headed dogs, Cerberus, is with him. When traveling he rides a chariot pulled by black horses.

Besides being an immortal god, one of his special powers was invisibility. He wore helmet called the Helm of Darkness that allowed him to become invisible. He once loaned his helmet out to the hero Perseus to help him defeat the monster Medusa.
