Different kinds of reading habits are adopted by us and we use them in our everyday life as well. From quick reads to re-readings for passing the exam with flying colours we are surrounded by these unknown habits. We somehow miss the relevance of them. None the less it is important to know what kind of habits can help you in the most fruitful way and when.

Before we know what kind should be used when. Let’s discuss certain reading habits. They have been categorised as follow:

Skimming
Also known as Gist reading. As the name says this kind of reading is to get a brief description of what the entire content holds. You do not have to run through the lengthy pages to know what the whole material holds. On a daily basis, we practice skimming while reading newspaper headings or running through the alphabetical order for telephone directory.

Scanning
Scanning involves scrutinising the entire text field. This may include a detailed analysis in order to know about the subject. Scanning means to get your eyes to scuttle across sentences and is used to get a piece of information. One should also pay special attention to the introduction and conclusions.

Intensive Reading
This is far way different from the above two and much more time-consuming. Intensive reading requires a lot of determination for getting on track. Intensive reading means to spend ample amount of time on the readings. Also, it is beneficial for language learners. It helps with retention for a long period of time. Example of intensive reading is learning the chronologies of historical ages.

Extensive reading
Extensive reading involves reading for pleasure. Because there is an element of enjoyment in extensive reading it is unlikely that students will undertake extensive reading of a text they do not like. It also requires fluid decoding and assimilation of the text and content in front of you. If the text is difficult and you stop every few minutes to figure out what is being said or to look up new words in the dictionary, you are breaking your concentration and diverting your thoughts.
