World laughter day is celebrated on 5 May every year. A day to the only laugh, be happy and enjoy ourselves is the laughter day. If we always remain happy and cheerful then every day will be the laughter day. No one likes a sad or depressed person, everyone likes a happy and cheerful person who is always laughing. Laughter day is celebrated all around the world.

In India, laughter day has first celebrated on 10 May 1998 in Mumbai. And Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the world Laughter Yoga Movement in 1995 had initiated the idea of celebrating the world laughter day. Dr. Kataria ideology was that the facial expressions of a person have a deep impact and effect on one’s emotions and feelings. So, everyone should always laugh that will have a positive impact on health.

The first laughter day that was celebrated by the whole world was in the year 2000. It was called the ‘HAPPY-DEMIC’, where more than ten thousand people gathered outside Town Hall Square in Copenhagen, Denmark.

There is no specific rule of celebrating laughter day. But a very important rule is that everyone must follow is to smile.Laughter Clubs are formed to celebrate world laughter day. In normal days also the members of the laughter club gather together and laugh together.

Normally, people celebrate world laughter day by gathering in the park, city halls,town halls telling jokes, making others laugh and they laugh themselves too. People pray for the world peace and read messages by Dr. Madan Kataria are read and later people just have a good old wholehearted laugh.

In some places, people march with placards on laughter. Some even produce the sounds of laughing like “HO, HO, HA, HA”, to spread the good effect of laughter all around the place. The members of the parade stop for some time and perform some Laughter Yoga exercise. At the end of the parade, the members of the perform a ten minute or longer laughter session ending with reading out loud, messages from Dr. Kataria.Different types of programmes like dance and laughter challenges are also held to make people laugh.

Laughing is itself a medicine. It keeps us fit. And it has many advantages like:

  • It helps to lose weight. By laughing one can burn the around 10-40 calories by laughing for only 15 minutes.

  • Laughing helps to keep young. It is the best facial exercise that will help to look young.

  • It boosts up the production of antibody-producing cells in our body, making the T-cells more powerful and creating a stronger immune system.

  • It reduces stress, anxiety, and depression.

Laughing has so many benefits. We do not need a particular day to laugh. Laugh every day and enjoy its benefits.
