Switch your TV on! The odds of finding an overdressed aunty, with her face full of makeup staring at you is quite high!
Well, that's what the Indian television scenario has reduced into. Most of the shows (serials) are just run-out-of-the-mill plots of rich families not knowing what to do, that's why they go looking for problems. And, the problems are showered upon them. And, hey! Their 'Bahu' (Daughter-in-law) always comes to the rescue.
But, let me tell you four reasons about why the shows are so bad.
1) Jumping the shark.
Because, why not?
Most of the serials introduce a character just for the sake of causing problems! This is done just after one of the thousand upcoming problems is solved! When, they don't can't get anyone else new , they just turn someone on our Bahu's team into a villain!
Also, a long lost brother or sometimes an entire family returns aid them during the crisis!
Let me give you an example:
Well, don't kill yourself after reading that.
2) No expiry dates?
A normal TV show in an American network will have about 60-180 episodes by the end of its run.
A normal Indian TV show can run upto 1000-2000 episodes without a proper conclusion. In this time, the serial would have gone through umpteen time jumps. Whenever the story comes to a conclusion, there's a meaningless time jump to introduce a problem. I agree, this has been done in some popular English shows too. But here, the time jumps are just irrelevant, the story turns into the same after a few episodes and you'll realise the serial just increased it's lifespan.
There's this serial which has been on AIR since 2008 (lol). And, the number of time jumps it has gone through might place the serial's timeline somewhere in 2040 or 2050. Yet, they're still bickering in 2019.
3) Amazonians everywhere!
That's right! No males!
Atleast, no strong male characters. Almost all of the serials are women centric, agreed! the intended target audience are the housewives and other women. Yet, a strong lacking of strong male characters can be found in most of the serials. Male characters do not show any dimensions and are merely reduced to caricatures.
A male centric serial would be a breath of fresh air!
4) What's Reality?
This is something which bugs me.
Who dresses up like this on a daily basis?
Like, seriously! And these serials show these women going out and doing detective work while dressed like this! Guess, their town doesn't have any chain snatchers!
From the costumes to the story, nothing makes sense! That's all I can say! Not to forget the zooms and the cuts and the sound effects and the.....
It doesn't stop, so I guess I'll have to stop.
If the showrunners try to rectify these mistakes, these serials might evolve into something better!
