The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) is a highly competitive medical entrance exam. Started as All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT), the medical entrance exam became the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) in 2012. Now, this is the only national level entrance exam in India for admission in medical colleges for MBBS and BDS courses. Earlier it was conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), but now the newly formed National Testing Agency (NTA) has taken charge of it. Candidates who passed class 12th with 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology are only eligible to apply for the exam.

Undoubtedly, NEET is one of the toughest exams to clear which students need to strive hard. This requires a proper planned stratergy to prepare for the exam. One must follow some of the following ways-

Understand NEET exam pattern: You must be thorough with NEET exam pattern. It helps you get an idea of the type of questions asked, marking scheme, duration of the exam and some other important details. NEET is conducted in a pen and paper mode for a duration of 3 hours. It comprises of a total number of 180 questions (45 questions from Physics, 45 from Chemistry and the rest 90 from Biology) carrying 720 marks in total. Every correct answer yields 4marks with a deduction of (1/4)for each answer stated wrong.

• Check NEET syllabus: Go through NEET syllabus carefully. Having a thorough understanding of NEET syllabus will not just help you make an effective study plan but will also help you save precious time on subjects that can be covered quickly and easily.

• Create a study plan: Make sure to utilize your time wisely. Plan your study in advance by noting down the chapters you want to cover in the coming days.

• Choose the best study material: Going through the correct set of books is very important. Consider taking help of your teachers or mentors while preparing. They are the main source of guidance. You can also seek help from the online teaching classes on YouTube.

• Make your own notes and revise frequently: Just building your concepts and going through the syllabus wont take you anywhere until you check your progress regularly. Often it becomes difficult to go through the entire book for revision. Therefore it is suggested to note down important points, formula, theorems in a separate notebook, which you can go through whenever needed. It will help you memorize things for longer.

• Take NEET mock tests: One of the best ways to check on your preparation is to solve NEET test series. Try to solve at least one question paper each day. Enrol yourself into online mock tests. It enhances your speed. Once you are done with your test, check your performance and analyse it to know your weaker areas and try to work on it.

By that point, all your hard work would’ve paid off, and you’ll be well on your way to achieving a seat in one of the medical colleges.
