"Water and air ,the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans."
-Jacques Cousteau
Imagine a vacation around your favourite beach covered with plastics and trash.
Imagine a sea, with more plastic and less fish.
And welcome to the world where the future looks exactly like this.
PLASTIC- The ruling element in every aspect of our daily lives.
An element which enters our oceans every year, pollutes our seas, littering beaches and a big danger to our aquatic ecosystem and wildlife.
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Plastic is made from fossil fuels which are just a century old. But unfortunately it is a material designed to last forever for products designed to last minutes.
So,half of the ever manufactured plastic has been made in the last 15 years, and Production has increased exponentially, from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 448 million tons by 2015.
Plastics often contain additives making them stronger, more flexible, and durable. But many of these additives can extend the life of products if they become litter, with some estimates ranging to at least 400 years to break down.
Must be wondering right, what's the big deal about this, here's the answer:-
Firstly, It is surely, our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth.
And millions of animals are killed by plastics every year, from birds to fish to other marine organisms. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by plastics. Nearly every species of seabird eats plastics.
That same plastic can even end up in humans. A recent study found that globally, we are swallowing an average of 5 grams of plastic every week -- although that doesn't all come from the oceans.
Also, plastics in all forms- straws, bottles, packaging, bags etc. are all choking our planet as using five plastic bags adds to one kilogram of carbon dioxide to our carbon footprint.
Ruling plastic out of our lives is going to take so much efforts and if truth to be told we cannot eradicate plastic completely but we can obviously restrict it from reaching oceans and seas.
And if you will start taking steps consciously in order to eradicate plastic from day to day operations , then only we can afford to dream of a better and safe future.
So be the part of solution and not pollution.
