When communication was not easy in the earlier times, people used to wait for days together for that one letter to arrive and now when, communication is so easy, we ignore messages with great ease. World is evolving but at what cost? We are losing our empathy as the day goes by. Social media anxiety is something new which has emerged in the twentieth century. People on various media platforms very easily body shame, make snide comments, sexually harass and the list is endless. Not only this but from teenagers to the older generation on social media have anxiety about how they portray themselves and the kind of pictures they upload, how many friends they have and how many people follow them. It makes one join the ‘‘race to popularity’’ and once you are in this you actually start seeing that there are some people who are better looking or having more likes, more followers which in turn starts giving anxiety to the person. He or she finds oneself feeling bad about themselves. They start experimenting with themselves so they can start looking “prettier” or “bigger” just for the sake of others who do not even know them or do not even matter. Teenagers specially feel this pressure of having to look good in their heads and they often end up engaging in troublesome activities. Although internet is providing us with vast knowledge and only a certain number of people actually know how to use it. The others are just sheep following the herd. Social media anxiety can result in serious consequences for the person if he or she is unable to cope with the fact that looking good on social media is not that important they will not suffer from this type of anxiety. We should be motivated to be more empathetic than distant from people and should avoid engaging in social evils. We’ve gone from connect to disconnect real quick.
