We humans are built for movement. Our ancestors spent the major portion of their lives in forests hunting prey or on the fields, cultivating crops. However with the advent of modern televisions, computers, automobiles have forced people to spend far longer sitting down than standing up, and it is taking its toll.

"Body benfits from Movement, and the mind benefits from Stillness." - Sakyong Mipham

The average human being spends around 9.3 hr sitting which is shockingly even greater than the time that we spend sleeping. Statistics show that sitting for any greater than 6 hr makes it greatly probable for you to die within the next 15 years. Here are the major ways in which sitting contribute to our deaths:

  1. Sitting makes us fat. This is common sense, resulting from reduced calorie burning

  2. Insulin effectiveness drops by 24% & risk of diabetes rises.

  3. Good cholestrol drops by 20%. You definetely need these guys to keep your heart in a good working condition.

  4. Enzymes that help break down fat drop 90%. Well, let us not interfere with our body's natural fat burning mechanisms by being a coach potato.

  5. Electrical activity in the leg muscles shuts off. Oops!

  6. You die of boredom, no seriously.

So how are we to make it out of our chair alive?

Well, you may not be entirely doomed if you take the proper precautions. Interupt the sitting whenever possible to move around a bit. Additionally you may take the extra step you get yourself a standing desk which allows you to work form a standing stance. TV watching which gets you nothing concrete. So do yourself a favour & replace it with outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, jogging, etc. You may further look into playing outdoor sports which don't just help in get your blood pumping but in addition are a lot of fun.
