A new academic session is about to initiate and students are putting their tooth and nail together to get into their dream college. The best part about acing college lies in transcending academics and be in tact with plethora of extrcurricular activities that come up the way. But it is undeniably true that only a few students know how to make the most of college life. Most of us, waste away our time and energy in finding fault with what we have. However, in real sense, college life implies a healthy development of mind, body and intellect. One is smart and fortunate who takes pleasures and sorrows with mature attitude to life and is never bothered by unfounded fears. He is bound to look on life with optimistic view and stay undaunted to the groundless hallucinations of thoughts. Modern life is complicated, hence the right way of grasping maximum opportunity in the very first attempt, has to be evolved by man so that his spirit and material lives may not clash against each other. His spirit may not starve,while he is busy in materialistic persuits.

Extracurricular activities will not only teach you how to handle peer pressure and other important lessons, but also become practical lessons to many of the classroom sessions that one attends over six to eight semesters. So, the need of the hour is to know which activity suits you the best. Here are few things that one can consider:

1. Active participation in sports: Almost every college has its own team for different sports. Every year, team captains along with teachers-in-charge conduct try-outs to earn a place in the team representing their respective university at the regional or national level. This is a great way of enhancing one’s CV, because many companies seek candidates who have proved their sportsmanship in their student life. Besides, the one who is interested to persue a career in sports, it is a great way to get the appropriate start.

2. Join societies: Colleges have wide range of societies catering to different impulses and instincts of students. Some of them are dance society, book club, poetry society, film society, music club so on and so forth. Joining these societies is a great way to extend the range of amiability, get extra credits and appreciation. This makes the future employers believe that you strive to be an all-rounder and creative instead of merely chasing the target of fetching marks. It is also beneficial for introverts to build their confidence. It polishes one’s personality by imbibing credibility in one’sownself.

3. Elections and appointments in student’s council: It is a council run by students under the supervision of faculty members. Its prime focus is to help students to develop leadership qualities and co-ordinating skills. There are also instances when students hesitate to share their problems with teachers. So, it provides students a platform to share problems with same-aged person and seek help. Being a part of the student’s council, one also learn about an organisation’s administrative work. It is a major boost to the CV, especially for political science and management students. It showcases sundry skills such as leadership, communication skills, patience, and management among others.

4. Attend cultural programs: The day when the Head of the departments of colleges explain students about the opportunities, facilities and services available on the campus, is said to be an orientation day. Many colleges have even started hosting fresher’s week where novices are called upon to get aquainted with their department and join them. One of the most talked-about events on campus are the cultural fests organised by the faculty and student’s council.

5. National Cadet Corps(NCC): It is a young wing of armed forces and is open to college students on voluntary basis. It is engaged in grooming the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens. The cadets are taught to use small weapons, and march in parades. The officers and cadets have no liability for active military training once they complete their course. This is the most advantageous course which attracts large number ofstudents who are planning to persue services in police service in future.

6. National Service Scheme(NSS): It is an Indian-government sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It is also a voluntary association of young people in colleges. Each NSS volunteer is rendered a cerficate which is another vital decoration on one’s CV in the field of social welfare. In addition to this, suitable candidates are also awarded Indira Gandhi Award at state and national level as per their eligibility.

Securing a decent grade is quintessential in college life. But simultaneously, it is also pivotal to explore venturesome opportunities, build contacts and gain lifeskills. There are enough foolish who turn their blessings into an incurable curse by overthinking and sticking to their confort zones. Hurdles cannot be divorced from life, hence cannot be left unacknowledged. Every person has a social responsibility to unravel complexities of his age. College life is the mirror of life and reflects the future happenings. Therefore, application of untouched ideas are essential to propagate the lofty ideals in this phase.
