The temperatures are soaring high upto 45°C. And with increased summer temperatures and outdoor activities comes excessive water loss- through sweating and evaporation- as your body works to stay cool.
We know that 60% of our body weight is made up of water and it is really necessary to maintain proper hydration for our overall well being.
What happens if our body doesn't get enough water?
We all are aware of the dehydration- when more water is moving out of the body rather than we are taking in- which results in muscle cramps, fatigue and extreme thirst.
Dehydration affects your brain as well. Our brain is made up of around 85% of water. Therefore, if there is a water loss in the body, there is a no. of negative and psychological effects which can lead to problems with short-term memory, attention, total-mood disturbance, increased pain sensitivity, reduces cognitive and motor skills.
Try these simple, easy ways to boost your hydration when it's hot out.
1. Drink lots and lots of water!
Water maintains the body temperature by carrying away the heat from your internal organs before serious damage occurs. Water is also essential for maintaining blood circulation throughout your body. Therefore, daily intake of water must be balanced. Begin exercise well-hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids during and after your exercise session. You should drink atleast 8 glasses (3.7litres) of water on daily basis.
2. Consume Coconut water
Coconut water contains two minerals that help balance fluids in the body- Sodium and Potassium. Coconut water, mineral-rich liquid, can replinish lost fluids in scorching summer temperatures.
Tip: Freeze some coconut water ice cubes for a refreshing treat.
3. Throwaway those plastic bottles!
Those cheap plastic water bottles are harmful for both you and the environment. Replace those bottles with BPA-free refillable water bottles to help you track your water intake each day. Keep that bottle near you, so you could sip throughout the day.
4. Drink before you eat!
We all are habituated with the late afternoon hunger pangs, when we munch on the calories. But before you have your favourite snacks just make sure you drink some water and hydrate yourself.
5. Add flavours
Depending on your preferences whether you like limes, berries, oranges etc., addition of any of the fresh fruit to your water will make your beverage refreshing and also hydrate your skin.
6. Munch away!
Eat atleast 5 cups of fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, spinach, radishes etc. for optimum health, as they all contain various levels of water and potassium.
7. Stay hydrated with chia seeds!
Despite their small size, chia seeds are full of important nutrients. They are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids, rich in antioxidants, fibre, iron and calcium. Chia seeds absorb thirty times their body weight in water, thus, they help in regulate body fluid levels. Next time before you work-out or go out in the Sun consume soaked chia seeds and you will remain super hydrated throughout the day.
