The tropic of cancer passes through the temple as well well as another famous temple in Gujarat Somnath temple. This imaginary line is also said to pass through Ujjain’s temple of Mangalnath, considered in Hindu cosmogony to be the birthplace of Mangal (Mars) and the closest point from Earth to Mars.

Ujjain was a political and commercial hub of central India and the capital of the Avanti kingdom in 600 BC.

It is among one of the seven “Mukti-Sthal” – the place that can liberate a human.

Right beside the Mahabaleshwar temple is the famous shakti peeth which is one of the 18 maha shakti peeth. The story goes as shiva was very angry that Sati Devi died that he had lost control and during that process, the body part of Sati Devi was scattered in all part of India and the different temple are made on top of the part. It has religious and cultural importance in our everyday life.

Each of the 51 Shakti Peethas has shrines for Shakti and Kalabhairava. The Upper Lip of Sati Devi is said to have fallen here and the Shakti is called as Mahakali. Ujjain has it's very own Jantar Mantar which is also known as vedh shala as it has all the science and astrology and was made in 1719 by Maharaja Jai Singh.

The primary purpose behind the construction of Jantar Mantar was to illustrate and compile the data collected by astronomical calculations, the results of which helped in the study of the movement of sun, planets and their moons.
