As she saw the rays of the sun streaming in through the hospital blinds
After all these years, she'll no longer have to guess everything her hand finds
Colours and flowers
Doors and drawers
Come alive as to say, "you did it, here you are"
Even though she never thought she'd make it this far
She never thought someone would give up something so precious for her
She never thought that there can be anything beautiful in her world
But she looks around and knows she was wrong
To see all of this, she's waited so long
Although she was captured by the world's vividness
There was one thing she saw that was priceless
In front of her was mum and dad's warm quivering smiles
For the first time, she had sight in her beautiful blue eyes.
There’s so much to learn from people who’ve lost their vision. Their perception of live is incredibly inspiring. That is what led me to write this piece. They believe eyesight is a gift but accept their fate and choose to live fully, regardless. They never think themselves to be completely helpless. Every Sunday, I watch this man walk into church with his stick. He sits by the side door and worships with so much joy. He’s never missed a Sunday. He takes the bus to make it there by 7am and if you think about it, how many of us have that kind of dedication? They may not be able to see physically but they can see far more important things that we usually miss out on. But there are moments when they also feel like there can be nothing beautiful in their lives. Mornings when they wake up and are washed over by waves of sadness because of the difference it makes to not be able to see anything. Some of them overcome the darkness and live in a light that fills their soul if not their eyes. But for those living in darkness for a long time, longing for sight, we can make a difference. We can vow to donate our eyes. We can persuade our friends and family to do the right thing as well. One small choice can give new life to another. Imagine not being able to see your own parents, the ones who brought you into the world. When we give, we give more than sight. We give hope, life and another chance. And that is a very beautiful thing.
