I never really thought about caramel popcorn
To me it was just a movie snack
Until my best friend once craved for some
And said that caramel's got a knack
She simply meant that it can make something as simple as popped corn so yummy
But I actually started thinking
And here's what caramel corn taught me
That this sweet and sumptuous syrup doesn't come easy
It's actually heated up till it gets brown and greasy
It might be silly but the heat made it better
All it's made up of is sugar and butter
So maybe facing the heat just means we're growing
To be like the rich, golden caramel
Something worth craving.

Caramel popcorn was one of the prompts I got while doing a challenge for National Poetry writing month, last year. It took me a while to write this poem but when I actually thought about it, caramel is nothing but sugar and butter. Two simple, everyday ingredients. But these ingredients are used to transform popcorn into something delicious only because they go through a process. A process of heating and boiling till it’s becomes dark and greasy. Even though it sounds silly, maybe, the long process we’re going through and the heat we’re facing only means that we’re turning into something better. As unpleasant as the process looks and feels, we’re still growing to be rich and it’ll be worth the wait.
