An activity that increases your flexibility, strengthens your muscles, centers your thoughts, and relaxes and calms you, we call it Yoga. It does all that and more.

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India.

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means to yoke, join, or unite. It could also be defined as "joining or integrating of all aspects of the individual - body with mind and mind with soul - to achieve a happy, balanced and useful life."

Yoga focuses on the mind by teaching you to concentrate on specific parts of the body. Yoga uses controlled breathing as a way to merge the mind, body, and spirit. The breathing techniques are called pranayamas.

Benefits:

High blood pressure (hypertension):

Many people believe that practicing yoga can help lower blood pressure by teaching breathing techniques and reducing stress.

Diabetes:

There is some evidence to suggest that yoga may lower blood glucose. It helps a lot in dealing with all the diabetic problems.

Strength and flexibility:

In one of the most persuasive yoga studies, men and women 18-27 years of age who participated in two yoga sessions per week for eight weeks increased the strength in their arms and legs.

Asthma:

There is some evidence to show that reducing symptoms of asthma and even reduction in asthma medication are the result of regular yoga.

Regular yoga practice creates mental clarity and calmness; increases body awareness; relieves chronic stress patterns; relaxes the mind; centers attention; and sharpens concentration,” says Dr. Nevins.

In more recent years, it has become popular as a form of physical exercise based upon poses that promote improved control of the mind and body and enhance well-being. One of them could be defined as “International Yoga day.”

International Yoga Day 2018 Significance:

The first Yoga Day celebration was held at Rajpath in New Delhi after the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2015. Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested the date of 21 June in his UN address, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world.

Yoga can be beneficial for those who suffer from lifestyle diseases and fitness disorders. There is a huge range of exercises and yoga poses that give a holistic healing power to the body, mind and soul.
