"Unemployment is like a headache or a high temperature -- unpleasant and exhausting but not carrying in itself any explanation of its cause" -WILLIAM HENRY BEVERIDGE,Causes and Cures of Unemployment

Unemployment is a curse to the society. It does not only impact the individuals but also the society as a whole.

People are willing to be employed but there are no jobs. These crowds of unemployed people include educated, trained, skilled, semi-skilled and illiterate people.

Causes of unemployment are:-

1)Shortage of means of production :- Shortages of raw materials, facilities, fuel, and electricity means decreased production of goods, which logically results in decreased availability of jobs.

2) Increased population growth :- Increase in population have been considerable over the half century. Moreover, India’s population ispredictedto exceed China’s by the year 2024. As the country’s economic growth cannot keep up with population growth, this leads to a larger share of the society being unemployed.

3) Slow economic growth :- Because the Indian economy is relatively underdeveloped, economic growth is considerably slower than it might otherwise be. It means that as the population increases, the economy cannot keep up with demands for employment and an increasing share of people are unable to find work. Thus, the result is insufficient levels of employment in the country.

4) The caste system :- Differentiation in caste is also a major cause of unemployment. In some places, certain kinds of work are prohibited for members of particular castes. This also leads to the result that work is often given to members of a certain community rather than to those who truly deserve the job i-e those who have the right skills. The outcome is higher levels of unemployment.

Conclusion - Unemployment destroys people’s self worth. Finding ways to fix the biggest problem should be the top priority of government.

Government should also encourage and develop industrialisation and agriculture based industries especially in rural areas so that the rural people don’t migrate to the urban areas.
