India is no longer a society rich for its ethics & morals. Every day you can find a couple of pages or more covered by ghastly murders, sensational robberies, kidnapping, thefts & rapes. Not a single fraction of second passes & other news of crime is heard in any corner of society. The graph of crime in India is rising sharply. Living alone for women has become unsafe & difficult. The poorest victims of this are women & old people. New Delhi, the capital of India has become a den of smugglers & criminals.

Reasons

Thefts & crimes are no longer the monopolies of illiterates but graduates have also entered into this arena. Lack of moral education & improper upbringing contributes to rising crime rates. Moral education finds no place in present education system & youth go astray from their path. Lack of employment avenues for educated people compels them to indulge in crimes to satisfy their never-ending needs and demands. Poverty also leads to crimes. The rise of consumerism & availability of a wide variety of goods & services also adds fuel to fire. The trend of nuclear families, where both parents are working leads to less or no attention to the child which paves way for them to be misled. Media also worsens the scenario as children learn what they see. The widening gap between rich and poor also contributes to the situation.

The illegal drug trade is also one of the increasing crimes in India. A survey conducted in 2003–2004 by Narcotics Control Bureau found that India has at least four million drug addicts. The rape of innocent girls, who had to wear this badge for a lifetime, by the men who are not less than devils is quite alarming. It renders women an unsafe environment to live in & they have to live with fear.

Solutions

Society has a direct influence on making criminals & this menace needs to be tackled on an immediate basis. It is a sacred duty of society to deal with this situation. Although many acts & legislations have been framed by the government to decrease crime rates, for example, The Information Technology Act 2000 was passed by the Parliament of India in May 2000, aiming to curb cyber crimes and provide a legal framework for e-commerce transactions.

Population control is one of the major steps which needs to be taken to decrease the crime rates. More & more employment opportunities for both educated & uneducated needs to be created. A significant transformation in the education system needs to be brought in terms of imparting moral education & vocational education. For instance, in the USA every student is trained from dishwashing to higher education so that he should never be a parasite on society any longer. Better & vigilant policing needs to be there & stringent actions need to be taken. Quick & timely legal actions need to be there. In a nutshell, today's children are tomorrow's citizens & need to abide by the law. Thus, it is crucial to cut the tentacles of crime rate & make society a safe & secure place to live in.
