How and why did the Unsinkable sink? You won’t get the answer just by watching James Cameron’s “Titanic” because there is a lot more than that.

Night of the Wreck

On 10th April 1912, the British ship set sail from Southampton, England to reach New York City, United States. But unfortunately couldn’t complete the journey as it started sinking on 14th April 1912 and completely sank in the North Atlantic on 15th April. Many investigations were led by scientists which revealed that many safety regulations were out of date and were not updated according to the ship standards. Although the owners never claimed that Titanic was unsinkable but it was covered in the magazines and journals. Many books have been written, movies have been made and researches have been done on how the unsinkable sank.

Reality Check

Everyone enjoyed the movie ‘Titanic’ but what is seen is not to be believed. Many of the characters were fictional including Jack Dawson(played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater(played by Kate Winslet). Their love story is also fictional based on a true incident. Although it is mentioned in the movie ‘based on a real incident’ many of the scenes were added. Proof for this is that the names of Rose and Jake were not on any of the passenger lists.

The most intriguing question about Titanic how it sank? People have queries that how can an iceberg destroy a ship so large. Many theories claim that Titanic was made from a special type of steel which became extra brittle in the cold and couldn’t stand the cold iceberg and cracked. Another theory which the ship engine’s worker claim is that it caught fire due to the coal. One very interesting yet superstitious belief was that Titanic was created in the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland which is believed to have been cursed. People believe that the curse was responsible for Titanic’s fate. There are so many theories and a statement that give different versions of how the unsinkable sank. But there is no 100% proof of how it happened. So we can say it sunk because of an iceberg.

One thing many people noticed is that the flashlights used in the movie ‘Titanic’, but flashlights were not used by the crew of Titanic. They were just released and not many used them.

Titanic didn’t use much of the real objects which were recovered from the real Titanic but a Violin which is used in the movie is the only object which was included in the movie. Also, the violin was played by the band when the Titanic started sinking.

Also when Titanic started to sink in the movie, it split into two and the scene was quite dramatic. In reality, nothing happened like that. One can watch how the Titanic sank in reality here.

By now we know that movies don’t covey the actual story which happened. They add something fictional to make things more interesting. When it comes to Titanic…can we say it was unsinkable? Nothing is perfect and everything has its flaws. Also, the Titanic was made to sail for the passengers not to fight battles. So what happened couldn’t be stopped. But I do have a problem with one thing that they should have carried a proper amount of lifeboats and more lives could have been saved. People lost lives, families in the tragedy of one of the most luxurious voyage. Technology is powerful and you may be amazed by the advancement going around in the world. But just remember the Titanic-which was unsinkable. All is not what it seems.

The sounds of people drowning are something that I can not describe to you, and neither can anyone else. Its the most dreadful sound and there is a terrible silence that follows it.-Eva Hart, Survivor of the Titanic
