Almost after 72 years of Independence, we are still chained to the restrictions of Caste System. Are we really from the 21stgeneration because there is still a word called “caste” in everyone’s dictionary which we rely for marriages, eating, touching and what not.

Dr. Payal Tadvi, resident doctor at the BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai committed suicide because of the harassment by her seniors, and the reason was that she was from a Adivasi community.Caste-based discrimination? Is it still prevalent in new India? From Rohit Vermula to Balmukund Bharti(AIIMS), everyone had their own tales of discrimination leading to suicide, isn't it? Our country is a prey to institutional murder. It’s unimaginable to think that the doctors who have to treat patients from all castes are discriminating on the basis of caste. They can even deny to treat people if they get to know that they are from a lower caste. It’s embarrassing to know that we are producing people who still consider caste a status or a recognition of the person.

“It will take more than a law to remove this stigma from the people of India. Nothing less than the aroused opinion of the world can do it”.Dr. Ambedkar, father of the Indian Constitution, messiah of the downtrodden said these words when ‘untouchability’ was banned from the Indian Constitution, but sadly it still prevails and so many innocent lives are lost due to this evil system. Is India a secular country? Despite reservations, the ST/SC community has to suffer caste based discrimination in every corner of our country. People call the reservation system redundant, but have they seen the situation in which they live and in which these communities live. There is a gap of lifestyle. And the struggle of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar cannot go in vain just by removing the reservations given to these people. The Reservation System helps people to bring on the same platform. Torturing, harassing and mentally disturbing a person just because he/she is a Adivasi does’t make the victim lower caste, it simply proves that they are mentally unstable.

What do the upper caste people possess which others don’t have. Why they are discriminated on the basis of caste, a mere distinction according to the Varna System. Why aren’t we developing when it comes to the basic ethics, like respecting each and everyone and not discriminating against caste and creed? Is it not so important? Varna System, a distinction done in the past to divide people in groups was the genesis of this caste system. But this is still prevalent in our country due to the mindset that touching lower caste groups will get them polluted. It’s not practical at all rather it shows how backward we are.

In a Country like ours, where equality, liberty and fraternity is celebrated, the vile casteist people murdering her, her hopes is outrageous. This is the murder of the rights of the marginalized communities. They murdered her dreams, cut her wings, stopped her from flying high. Such heinous act shall not be accepted. The accused should be punished, no liberty should be given. If we don’t fight, it will never stop.We will not be suppressed, we will stand, we will fight and we will win this war of caste based discrimination.

"We are Indians firstly and lastly." - Dr. B.R. Ambedkar
