A man who thinks more about our environment than anyone of us has ever had. Aabid Surti is a painter, journalist, cartoonist, author, environmentalist, playwright and screenwriter hailing from India. He is 84 years old and is doing a tremendous job in saving the planet. His NGO Drop Dead is a very innovative idea to save water. We all can do it. Drop Dead is a one-man NGO in which Aabid Surti along with a plumber and also a volunteer goes to apartments in his complex and ask “Do you have a leaking tap in your home?” If someone says yes then the plumber does his work and the tap is fixed. If someone says no then Aabid Surti apologizes for ringing the bell. Because of him, 20 million litres of water have been saved to date. Every Sunday Aabid Surti sets on a journey to save every drop of water which is being wasted because of our carelessness. Every drop counts but why we say “it’s just a drop.” The change starts within us and we don’t do our part it will be too late. A man with so many professions is concerned about leaking taps. It may seem a small work but it takes a large heart to do this. He also refuses to take any money. The charges for the plumber and the volunteer is fully paid by him. Although his costs are low, when his money runs short then only he accepts funds for the NGO.
Aabid Surti’s childhood was tough. He lived on the streets of Mumbai. His mother used to queue up for 4 kilometres to get a bucket of water. He has seen as well as felt the scarcity of water. When the UN chief in 2007 announced that there will be a water crisis by 2025 in more than 40 countries, Surti was taken aback and was determined to do something about water shortage. Once he saw a leaking tap at a friend’s house and that hurt him a lot. The struggle for water in India is real. And rarely anyone is bothered.
There is so much news from India of water scarcity that it’s hard to mention all of them here. But I will mention a few of the cases of the water struggle in India.
The only way to get water in Rajasthan in to dig Ponds
Tamil Nadu seeks 5,000 crore aid from the centre of drinking water
Ranchi man injures 6 over water dispute
Water is essential for living and no one can survive without water. A man can do anything to get water. So why not we start by saving it. It's better to save water than fighting for it later.
We can do a lot of things. A few important things to conserve water which comes under our daily routine are:
Turn off the tap while brushing
Your Toilet doesn’t need the flush every time.
Leaks should be fixed ASAP!!!
Buy water efficient goods.
Reuse the water.
Make the usage of water multi efficient.
When washing utensils, cutlery, and plates by hand then turn off the tap when not rinsing.
Wash the fruits and vegetables in a pan instead of running water.
The wastewater from fish tanks while cleaning than can be given to plants.
While giving fresh water to our pets, dirty water can be used to plant trees and shrubs.
Use a sprinkler to water garden plants.
There are lots of ways in which we can save water. And the change starts with us. If we don’t act now, our future generations will suffer a water crisis at the maxim level.
Don't waste water even if you were at a running stream.-Prophet Muhammad
