This word is being heard a lot now a days. People often link it up with favour. But it has a wide meaning. The word Nepotism comes from the latin word nepos meaning nephew. It is the act of giving unfair advantage to any relatives or friends by the means of power or influence.
When people use their power to give undue advantage to any of their relatives, it gives a sense that power is in the wrong hands. Generally people practice this act for their benefit too. Like if they are getting any perks from the acts of nepotism then they make it sure to fulfill it till the end.
There are many aspects where nepotism is practised like bollywood, politics, businesses and sometimes teaching. Lets understand each aspect separately.
Recently nepotism got itself in news on the famous talkshow Koffee With Karan where one of the guests, a renowed star Kangana Ranaut, accused the host of the show Karan Johar for being the flag bearer of nepotism. Bollywood has been always the root cause of nepotism. Many artists are debuted with the help of any of their relatives in the industry. It causes outsiders to feel that it is nearly impossible for them to stand on their own in this huge industry. If we take an example; Tiger Shroff's debut Heropanti was a hit because he was launched by his father Jackkie Shroff. Had he not been a son of a famous celebrity, it would have been very difficult for him to make his place in Bollywood at such a young age. There can be many examples where we can relate the life of a celeb if they were from an ordinary family.
Such examples make it difficult for the commoners who aspire to make it big in this industry to survive. Not only bollywood, but politics is another area where nepotism is still served.
Most of the politicians are becoming popular because of the fame of their family members who have got themselves in a position of fame. From Rahul Gandhi to Akhilesh Yadav, many examples are there where we can tell nepotism still exists. These politicians get an unfair advantage over other politicians. Often the position of head of a political party is rotated amongst these flag bearers of nepotism. Those who are below them feel thwarted as they never get a chance to get elected at the top. At the time of elections, these people get the election ticket just because they are the son or daughter of a renowed politician. Politics is already accused with corruption and crime; it got itself another tag of nepotism.
The business industry is not at all behind these accusations of nepotism. Businesses follow the principle of perpetual succession. So the next head of a business would be someone from the family only.
Specifically in businesses, those who are working in a company, feel infuriated when told to be working under a new boss who is also from the same family. This decreases their chances to 0 of being promoted to the top. Such indifferences creates a turbulence in the working of the whole company and conflicts arise.
There are many examples like Ivanka Trump, daughter of Donald Trump Jr, president of the United States. She has been appointed the Vice President of development and acquisitions of Trump Organisation despite of her young age. She carried forward the torch of nepotism and made sure that such practice should be preached. It takes away the rights of those who are qualified for a particular task but aren't able to get it just because they don't belong to the family which gives the heir of the company each year.
The question is " Is it right or wrong"? Some people criticise it while others say in favour of it. For some, nepotism should not be practised as it takes away the opportunity from the common people. While for some, it gives the chance to those who have relevant talent and skills. It is a contradictory issue which needs to be resolved for the sound working of any particular organisation - be it bollywood, politics, business.
