Communism is an economic and social system where most property and resources are collectively owned by a classless society and not by individual citizens.

Founded by two German Political Philosophers, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels who met the second half of 19th century.thry discovered to have similar principles and in 1848,wrote and published - THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO which became the foundation.

Communism became the dominant political philosophy for many nations across East Europe,Africa,South America and Asia and in late 19th century, developed in Old Soviet Union.

The rise of capitalism in 20th century disrupted communist principles and so many nations either turned to alternative political framework or allowed the philosophy to bend with a new cultural climate.

1. vietnam-
Following the split of the First Indo-China war, Vietnam was split up at a conference in 1954.North Vietnam established as a communists state supported by Soviet Union while South Vietnam democratic rule was backed up USA. Then following the 2 decades of Vietnam War, 1976,vietnam unified as a communist country.

Technically, Vietnam still a communist country with one party rule. However in recent decades, moved towards a market economy that has seen disruption of socialist values.

Vietnam is now the world's fastest growing economy set to become a modern industrialized state by 2020.Despite these economic reforms and adoption of capitalist values, Human Rights and freedom of speech are still limited in the nation. All news media are under government control and there are heavy penalty for criticising the Government.

Vietnam continues to shift in both policy and culture and it's not unimaginable that it will veer fullyyaway from communism sometime in the next decade.

2. laos

Established as a fully communist state in 1975,following a revolution supported by Vietnam and Soviet Union. The government of Laos is largely run by military generals who support one party system that is founded in Marxist ideals.

Media outlet, The Economist published an article in 2016,stating that Laos has the world most closed political system after North Korea.

But Laos is changing and has been influenced by democratic ideology both Via tourism and trade.
is Laos truly a communist state when there is stock exchange and private sector that fast expanding.

In 2009,obama declared that Laos has ceased to be a Marxist Leninist country.

3. north korea

Due to notorious activity at world stage, North Korea has become a mouth piece in international geopolitics.

Getting clear information of the state is not easy as the state has full control over the media. Though most of the world sees, North Korea as a communist state, it doesn't.

For decades, the Kim family believes in juche, the doctrine of self reliance popularised in the 70s in spirit of Korean nationalism.

So is North Korea a communist country or a western misinterpretation of the way this secretive country is governed.

In 2009,north Korean constitution was changed to remove all mention of the Marxist and Leninist ideals and even the word, communism was also removed.

What we do know about North Korea that it has questionable Human Right records and many strict controls. According to South Korea government estimates and Human Rights watch, 150,000-200,000 North Koreans live in prison camps, only government and military officials are able to own motor vehicles, all televisions are tuned to state controlled domestic programming and no internet exists except a closed domestic network.

4. china

In 1949,Mao Zedong took the reins of red China.
The CCP has revolutionised the country, most notably making China the second largest economy, strengthened China in South China Sea and challenged American hold. China's presence in Indian Ocean has expanded with reel building the ports of Sri Lanka and by development of China -apakistan economic corridor.

The underpinning of these activities has been the expansion of a capitalist economy that continues to grow more. In 2004,the constitution recognised private property.

However, Chinese banks are nearly all state owned.
Media companies are state owned
All land belong to the government.

5. Cuba

Perhaps best known for the 1962 Cuban Missile crisis, a 13 day confrontation between the USA and Soviet Union concerning the American ballistic missiles deployment in Italy and Turkey,a nerve wracking time that could have lead to a full scale nuclear war.

In 1961,a fully communist state was established following the revolution takeover by Fidel Castro and his associates.Cuba continues having a monopoly on the majority of economic activity withincentralized state enterprises and there are restrictions on freedom of speech, assembly and press.

There have been changes in Cuba in recent years, increased engagements with USA under the Obama administration saw relaxed travel policies however things changed dramatically in 2017,under Trump's administration.

There is a lot of deviation from the original communist economic and social systems.

Will these nations continue operating under a communist ideology or will things change as new ways of living and systems of governance are adopted?
