Well many times you wonder that what am I, who am I, A Rajput, A Hindu or what??

Ever wondered from where you get these thoughts in your mind??

If yes then let’s explore further that what is self and why you describe it so as you describe it now.

Well let’s consider a toddler does he/she know anything about “self”?

The answer is no because a toddler can’t express his/her emotions and idea that well as a grown up child.

So it’s clear now that the concept of self always emerge from interaction with the environment like parents, friends or teachers .These all elements give us a meaning .

So according to this a single “self” isn’t simply a self but a collection of selves.

Either take it as a social self, as a subject or object or any member of any caste, community etc.

But how to access all these selves at once.

So let’s narrow down them in two categories.

  1. Personal: In which we are concerned with self only.(includes all biological needs).

  2. Social: which emerges after interaction.

Now let’s see various part of a self.

  • Esteem.

But what is esteem? And then what is ego?

Esteem is judgment of self-value/self-worth.

Comparing it with ego it is a much extended version of this.

As people as excess of everything is bad, it’s a result of same.

Comparatively very low esteem is also dangerous which can send an individual in despair and depression.

That’s why our teachers always say that help students poor in class so as to build confidence in them and as a result they do exams with flying colors.

  • Self-efficacy is the mentality of an individual as to what extent he/she can control his/her real life aspects by luck or self-decisions.

Bandura’s theory suggests that people get this from imitating others.

And people who have self-efficacy in self-have much greater self-control and self-regulation.

  • Self-Regulation

As name suggests that it is about self-control or will power.

It helps in achieving higher goals in life.

And it’s not applicable in psychology but in cultures too for example Muslims do Rosa or Hindus do fasts. These are the best examples of self-regulation.

Now let us see some techniques of the same.

You can do self-observation to control self ,instruct yourself or reward yourself if you achieve a particular goal etc.
